I have been reading Shane's latest and I have to say that I am impressed with the amount of quality material here. As I said in the rant on my new arrival post previously:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=42 I am always surprised at how adding a meaningful (and usually dark) story to relatvely simple effects can create such a powerful and dramatic effect on my audience. As far as Shane's excellent book, I was curious if anyone out there has used any of these effects from "Pentalogy" and the reaction they received from them. Even though I have only finished the first book of five, I have found at least four or five effects that seem to me to be exceptionally strong including: Cassandra's Quandary Revisited Squeal of Fortune Message in a Bottle November Rain True Cost of Money Any comments about these or any other effects in "Pentalogy" would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Drew

I actually purchased the five books that made up Pentology as they came out -- and have used routines from them with success. My favorite is predicting the end of the world ala Nostradamus - and I just had 200 skeptics (Center for Inquiry) view it and try to take it apart (they couldn't) as part of my presentation on Psychic Frauds.

I have R. Shane's book, however, I haven't had the opportunity to perform for a "real" audience yet. The family is a little worried about me though.
The book impresses me greatly. |

If you think that you may have any interest at all in "Pentalogy", do yourself a favor and visit the Leaping Lizards website and download the .pdf preview. This isn't some "see a random page" sample that some other booksellers/publishers offer, this is 20-30 pages from the actual book that allows you to get a true feel for the author's message and personal style. After all, how many of us have purchased hermetically sealed "shrinkwrapped" books from a magic shop only to discover that the cover was the most interesting part of the book?
Why don't more magic publishers do this? (I think we all already know the answer to that one) And before anyone accuses me of being a paid stooge for the company, I assure you that nobody at Leaping Lizards has a clue who I am, nor should they.

Thanks spasm, no I don't know who you are, but I like the fact that you are an "aspiring creepy person," per your profile!
We try to offer REAL previews of all our books, and thank you for the feedback. I figure, if you like what you see in those first pages, you'll be an informed buyer- and if you don't then you won't buy something and end up not liking it. Cheers!

The very first effect in the book has become one of my favorites. It is so mysterious that, even though I have performed it a number of times, it still baffles me! Shane has provided a great story to go along with it which deals with the Bermuda Triangle. I also purchased Pentalogy after downloading the preview at Leaping Lizards; it's a great way to sell a book!

“Cassandra’s Quandary Revisited” is a variation of Guy Hollingworth’s “Cassandra Quandary” which is in itself a classic effect found in his “Drawing Room Deceptions” book. You can actually read Shane’s version of this effect yourself on the free preview. “November Rain” and most of “True Cost of Money” is also on there.
http://www.leapinglizardsmagic.com/pentalogy.htm Go check it out yourself, read through it and see if it’s your kind of thing. Shane has a unique gift for combining simple effects with powerful stories, but again it’s not for everybody. The other thing is the fact that “Pentalogy” isn’t exactly cheap, but in the right hands I believe that it could be worth it. This is why I applauded his publisher Leaping Lizards for posting a sizeable preview of it. I can honestly say that I probably wouldn’t have purchased this type of book sight unseen. I have been burned far too many times. Again, let me make this clear. I am not trying to make anyone buy this book. In fact, it’s against my best interests to let even anyone know about it. I’ve lurked around these boards long enough to know that a lot of these kind of posts, often come off sounding like some company hack who was sent to the forums to pump up sales. Trust me, I don’t know anything about Shane (except the fact that he wrote a pretty decent book) and he certainly wouldn’t know me from a billet lying on the ground, but I do think that we need to keep encouraging talented magicians like Shane who put out quality material, to keep doing so. The only way that’s going to happen is by buying his books and stroking his ego (if he’s into that kind of thing) otherwise he might as well just keep his ideas to himself.

I wish I could afford the book right now. Just the free, downloadable part would be worth the price of the book!

I have One, Two, Three, and Four. I bought them as they came out. These books are very inspirational. Shane takes effects that are mundane and turns them into THEATRE. This is a rare talent in the regular magic world. The nice thing about some of Shane's work is that it is not too bizarre, and there is light stuff as well as dark stuff, providing an emotional roller-coaster ride and variety. Being able to find routines that provide such things is difficult, even in the bizarre branch of magick (where too often, everything is simply dark or morbid).
Sincerely, Dale A. Hildebrandt |

Agreed, Dale- That is one of the things I love about Shane's writing and why I sometimes hesitate to classify it as bizarre. So much bizarre stuff is really NOT all that performable, whereas this stuff is commercial and for the most part not TOO dark.

I received it in the mail yesterday (From Doug Byrd at VanishingArts, buy stuff from him!) and haven't been able to put it down. Great book.
Actually, one of the things I really like about it is that he doesn't worry about using things like coins and playing cards. High ritual and scaring the cr@p out of the audience are great and wonderful things, but my best stuff, bizarre and not, generally uses regular magic props. It's really good to see someone of Shane's caliber doing this also. I don't feel so freakish (around all you freaky people, or amongst the freaky "normal" magicians). Mark
