What is the name of the giant three card monte effect that Harry Anderson does on his Hello, Sucker! video? Also, is it a marketed effect or is it homemade?

I think you are referring to one of his trademark effects called "Monarch Monte."

I'm not aware of it being available, per se, but you can find it described in the book "Wise Guy" by Mike Caveney.

Here is a link to the School For Scoundrels web site where you can find this book.

If this is NOT the effect you're referring too, well...sorry!

Good luck, Mark.

Three Card Monarch hasn't been sold for a long time. That's a combination of Good & Bad News because the cards as supplied by Sun Magic (AZ) were really big and unless you are the stature of Harry Anderson they were somewhat awkward to handle.

One of the dealers did (does?) sell a more manageable version size-wise called Three Card Prince. This last may still be available...

Well, I'm 6'5 so I shouldn't have a problem handling cards that big. LOL

Thanks for the link Mark.

Hi Jack,

Your welcome. Hope it helps.

At 6'5" you should not have any problems with the cards. After all, Harry Anderson is only 6'4"!!!

Wow, I didn't know he was that tall to be honest. I guess he just acted with a lot of tall people on Night Court.

I was surprised myself when I saw just how tall he is. I always thought he was much shorter.

Here is the link where I found this out. You'll be able to find out more about "Harry The Hat" if you're interested. It's basically his bio.

That bio isn't accurate...trust me. I'm 6'3", and I have to look up at Harry...even when we're sitting down...it's very disconcerting. The effect isn't called "Monarch Monte" in it's marketed version (originally from Sun Magic/Jack Sutherland/Barry Schor in Arizona. It's called "3-Card Monarch". There were 475 sets made/sold for $150 each. I've personally owned 5 sets over the years, and still have my original set. Last set I saw sell on ebay went for over $300. Sometimes they sell without the original leatherette "wallet"/carrying case, sometimes without instructions. The instructions (when this was originally advertised) were supposed to be individually signed by Harry and numbered. They were numbered, but Harry never got around to signing them. Mine are signed. The smaller "3-Card Prince" is still very effective, and you don't need the wallet/carrying case to prop cards against in the routine, just a table.

I've discussed this with Harry and Barry Schor (now of Presto Magic...there's your plug, Barry)...that's how I know all about this great item. I've loved it since I first saw it advertised. The actual one Harry used to use was hand-made on cardboard...that might be the one you saw on "Hello, Sucker". Even Harry says the original GIANT one is too big for him now. He uses the Prince. He says the Monarch (when you're wearing a mic) gives you sound problems when the cards are in front of you.

Thanks for asking...more questions about Harry stuff? For you Harry collectors out there....I even have an original, hand-made set of "Pendelusion", an effect Harry made while in a motel room on the road in the 1970's. He still doesn't like it, says it rambles too much. He's right, but mine is signed!

Hi magicjack:

My problem with both Three Card Monarch and Prince is neither would fit in my suitcase table, so I had to carry them separately.

I used to have Three Card Monarch, but left it at a show a few years ago and went back and it was gone. It was at a local Marriott Hotel, so anyone could have taken it.

So, I bought Three Card Prince, but it was still too big for my case, and I had to carry it separately. Three weeks ago, I had a show at another local hotel, and left my Prince cards there. I didn't realize it until 4 or 5 days later, but by that time they were long gone.

So now, I'm having CardMaker in Germany make me a custom set where the cards are about as big as the jumbo B'wave cards sold by Meir Yedid. They will fit in my case easily - but I'll sure miss that massive look of those Monarch cards.

I really love this routine, and have done it for close to 20 years, when Jack Sutherland sold the first batch. I believe you can still get the Prince cards from Hank Lee or Denny and Lee.

King Monte (9.5" by 14") and Super King Monte (20" x 30") by Dave Powell are other versions.

Hello:

I just received my jumbo cards from Cardmaker, and they are beautiful. They are about 8.5 by 11 inches, so they're easy to handle. Another thing I like is I was able to choose the back design - I chose red bicycle backs which I like much better than the Bee-style backs you get from the standard version. The total cost including postage was around $50.00. Cardmaker (Bernd) is also a member here, so you can contact him.

I generally use the Prince, and they fit into the bottom compartment of my Lefler table, and also the bottom of my Viking "Pro-Table"....let's hope I never FORGET to take 'em home with me.

I am 5.6 and love how big the cards are. The audience love the fact I struggle with them. I would not sell my set for $1000. It's a main stay of my show.

Hocus-Pocus sells the "Three Card Prince", they don't (at least it's not listed anywhere on their site) sell a "Three-Card Monarch".

Need HELP with Harry Anderson's Three (3) card Prince (Monarch) HELP
I have the Prince version of this set that I got when it came out, but I have yet to be able to work through it, even using a mirror or video camera.
I am a visual learner, is there a video version of the instructions?

In Harry's hands it the largest version, the 3 Card Monarch...the one that was sold by Hank Lee (before he tried a sucker trick on a customer) was the 3 Card Prince...I have two of them...one I used in my act and one I kept in case anything happened to the first...

"Alice's Wonderland Monte", recently released in The Wizards' Journal #33, is Spellbinder's new variation along the lines of Monarch Monte, but without the tricky king/queen and able to have every card show its front and back from beginning to end. Since you make it yourself using your computer printer, it can be in any size you are able to print. If you wish you can even build it from regular playing cards, from small to jumbo to super jumbo playing card cutouts used for party decorations.
