Hello to whoever is willing to answer.
I am looking for info and discussion on managing the business end of being a full time performer (i.e. what is the best program to use, advertising tips, and more). Is there a specific place/forum for this and I have just missed it? I could search specific topics, but would like to just look through general posts on the subject and see what is interesting.
Thanks for your help.

Tricia and Daniel,

My wife and I perform as a magic team specializing in family-style magic and illusion shows for festivals, fairs, schools and theaters. I am also a graphic designer with a passion for marketing and knowing how to not only get gigs, but land the gigs I want to be performing at. It would be my pleasure to assit you in any way that I can and and answer questions for you as well as point you in the right direction.

To get you started I would HIGHLY reccomend you checking out http://www.thedean.net
It is a site devoted to the success and business side of entertainment. I learned a ton there with just reading, posting questions and discussion. It would be a great place to start.

If you would like, please feel free to PM me or e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would be happy to talk with you in more detail and answer any direct questions you muight have on marketing your magic business. My pleasure.

I always seek to help those who want to help themselves.

AS far as the books go I use quickbooks online. That way I can do my invoices and booking from any hotel room or library computer.

Mike,

Thanks but I am no genious. hehe I have just been around the block a few times, learned from my experiences and really started studying marketing about 5 years ago. Since I have studied and used the marketing principles and ideas, every year I have reached my goal and then some. I have been able to perform less shows for a lot more money and perform the shows I WANT to perform and not the shows I HAVE to perform. It has been great for my wife and I and we are very grateful.

As far as a contact management software or application, I prefer ACT myself as it is more robust and it allows me total creative freedom to develop the fields the way I want them based upon how I run my business. It also allows for mail merge and syncs up with outlook, excel and other apps you may already be using.

Kyle

PS: Mike, I love the new avatar. =)

Another person to check with is Jim Snack at http://www.success-in-magic.com

I bought his course when I first got on the Café a couple of years age and it paid for itself within 30 days! Great info from him.

No question the top people for advice are Jim Snack and Kyle Peron. Follow what they say, have a good show and you WILL be successful.

The best "forum" you can possibly find is to go to your local community college and find courses on small business administration. Take courses in sales, marketing and administration.

Look outside the magic community for these things if you want a complete education.

I agree about Kyle and Jim, but if you want to know far more, go to school.
