I read this and was just wondering if there are other jobs where you might earn money doing magic at the same time as doing the job.
"David Blaine started to work in high-class restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. Here, he performed amazing magic while serving tables and waiting on regular patrons. He watched as his reputation grew and he began to earn several hundred dollars in tips each night." I'm not looking for a job but some might be. Personally I would love it if I went out for a meal and found the waiter was a magician.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I would take any of David Blaine's stories with a pinch of salt.
Lots of salesmen use magic as an ice-breaker. Any job which involves interaction with the public could use magic, or comedy, or anything similar. |

Yep. Working behind a bar just to keep the tip jar filled was my launching pad into full time magic.

I am a real estate agent, and I perform for many of my customers. I think it is a great way to seperate yourself from the others. I get jobs from real estate prospects, and real estate clients from magic contacts. They work hand in hand for me.

Yes I think it might help to get get a job in the right place where you might meet famous people, like high-class restaurants etc. There was a young magician on TV here the other day only because he happened to have done a couple tricks for famous people by chance in the street. Well I am not sure it was by chance or if he sort sort them out. Anyway by doing trick for one the royal family got him a spot.

Blaine needs not to be taken at his word about restaurants. He is not a 4 star server to say the least.
Think of it like this. Tips are based on personality. Nuff said. Other thing is that a good server in one of those places regularly make over $400 a night. Doing his magic just brought him up to average. Nice stories, nice things to tell, but probably not too true. As for jobs to do magic at there a ton of jobs. Any sales job practically.

I read a lot about magicians working in restaurants. personally here in the Netherlands I can't say I remember ever experiencing anything of the sort.
How does that work? You apply for a job as a waiter and have the liberty to perform magic to the clients for extra tips? Or are you hired specifically as a magician/waiter or not even a waiter at all? Does the restaurant have this as a theme and are guests aware of the presence of the magician? Please educate me on this intriguing line of work.

One of the best jobs where you can do magic is Operating Room Nurse. You come in, do a card trick and the surgeon makes you disappear.

I can think of a job where you get paid to do tricks, but I don't think I should mention it here.

I used to do magic while waiting tables in high school. If you do it well, it can make you some pretty good money. But you need to be careful about when and how much magic you do. If someone is waiting for their meal forever because you keep doing card tricks, they will complain and that will be the end of your extra income. To put it simply: be a waiter first and a magician second.

When I had a corporate job, I performed in board rooms and business meetings 1000's of times. I taught me a lot. I learned to deal with a sophisticated and educated audience. I learned to deal with angles. In many cases, I had to deal with mirrors in the room. It also helped my creativity, because I constantly had to come up with new stuff because I was performing for many of the same people all of the time.
After awhile, I started getting requests to work private parties and to go over to someone else’s office to perform. Eventually, magic started taking up more time than my real job. It was about this time that I started thinking that I just might be able to do this full time. My previous employer still hires me to do shows several times a year. |

What makes you think that David Blaine has no personality, when it is so obvious that his TV performance persona is well thought out and completely intentional. I have to agree with Big Daddy on this one because I DO believe that Blaine in real life is not the character that we see in the media. And yes, it is a well thought out character. Look at his first couple of specials and you will see a more personable and fun loving person. The scene that sticks out the most with me is when he is performing for a group of Asian folks. Really nice receptive audience and David was laughing with them and cutting up.
I don't want to turn this into a DB thread, but I do think that he could have been a wonderful waiter....but heck, we'll never know. I don't think he'll be waiting any tables any time soon.

I read somewhere about the amount of time Blaine and Harris put into creating his character.
it is a very well thought out character so there is no need to assume how blaine acted as a waiter.his true personality beeing unknown to us we can only speculate.and that won't help at all. -Matt
