Okay, I told myself I would try to stay away from controversies but sometimes a person has to stand up for something so here goes..........

I just came across this and even though I am hosting right now, I was shocked and had to reply, what a horrible thing to say.

"Doesn't bother me a bit if the ****s tape is a rip-off. Is it the best?"

That is equal to saying I don't care if the car is stolen, I will take it if it is the best."

Now what if you had a great car and somebody stole it, would you not be upset with the person who bought it knowing it was stolen from you? Or would you encourage car stealing? Would you say, "Hey, it's just a car?"

For some of us, we put a major part of our lives into our effects and our work, just as much as the carmakers do.

It almost makes you want not to invent anything and sell it.

I am not going to say what this is in reference to. The actual question of rip off or not on this item has been mentioned before and I have made my feelings very clear on it. I would rather the emphasize be on this kind of attitude. Rarely do I say that anything is wrong for any specific person as we are all different, but this is just plain eithically wrong for anyone to think this way

I have to conclude that this post was a joke, or someone simply trying to get a rise out of folks. Well you succeeded. To think that way is as bad as exposure in my book and any person that truly feels that way does not belong in magic.

Exposing outside our art we have very little control over, this attitude within our art we do. Maybe, and I hope so, it is just a matter of maturity. If so, that can change and probably will over time. If a matter of ethics, well that is harder to change.

Sorry for getting on a soapbox but as I started with, sometimes you just gotta stand up for something.

Well said. And you do not have to apologize for speaking out against theft!

I am wondering how such a person justifies themselves in their own mind... if they have an actual ethical position of some kind (such as "the rip-off artist is the one responsible, it is not my responsibility to screen my purchases in this way", or "there is no such thing as theft of information, only of material goods"), or if they just don't care about anyone but themselves.

It's a question of ethics. We have to protect our own. I've seen this around the country as well, some "shop" selling a "home-made" item created by someone else. It sucks! It really sucks. I have "improved" (for my own use) ideas created by other people but I would never neglect to say where it came from originally because I want those creative individuals to keep creating or the ones who are no longer with us to get the respect they deserve. I want the ones still around to create to their heart's content without worrying about getting spit in the face. Can anything be done about it? I do what I can, as we all individually should. For those who don't "create", you may stumble upon something someday ... and wouldn't it stink if "our own" didn't respect your efforts?

If it is within our community of magic, yes something can be done about it. Attitude and zero tolerance for those who promote such thinking. Now I know there are sometimes extenuating circumstances but his post said straight out that he will support rip offs if it benifits him. That is no better than the person doing the rip off since it does many things. It encourages rip offs, it encourages unethical behaviour and it puts a black eye on magic as a whole. Other people already hear and think that the magic world is full of unethical people that steal from each other. I hear it all the time.

There is a duality in the order of things in this particular universe....there is no explanation for this as of yet.....

For every action=reaction, negative/positive,push/pull,
unity/divisiveness,

Without one we cannot have the other....that is the natural law!

There are two kinds of people in this Universe...we all inhabit....

Givers and Takers

Each person at this very moment should take some time to reflect.....Which category do you fall under....?

Are you willing to face the consequences of your conviction or lack thereof?

This is the time of the year for giving not taking....and remember,

"The creator balances his checkbook!"

Are you overdrawn?

May the creator bless those who know not what they do!

Questions? Questions? Few answers!

Respectfully submitted,

Its a great shame that with the internet revolution came the increase in the attitude that everyone thinks they have the *right* to instant access to everything...and for free.

Although we are primarily concerned with this attitude as it applies to the magic community I am often staggered by some individuals who are happy to support some rip-offs and condemn others.

I'll add my personal pet hate which illustrates this point well: I've come across many magicians that fight tooth and nail (quite rightly) to guard against rip-offs but will gladly post to the Magic Café with their computers that have pirate versions of Windows and refuse to pay for any software they use.

Sorry to rant...needed to get it off my chest.

Kris,

I'm stunned it is even possible to buy a PC that doesn't have a pre-installed pre-licensed program of Windows. Well, unless you buy it on a Shanghi street corner.

OK so anything is possible. Smile
