Magic is addicting, kind of like drugs... but it does not harm the body.

Yeah, I've spent so much on magic. I've learned to cutback, but just like any other hobby, I will always be fascinated by it.

Old thread, new thought:
Magic is very addictive. However, I have a kindergartner who has been on stage with me since she was around four as my assistant, and she and I do a fair amount of shows together. Now, as a kindergartner, she is often the magician and I am the assistant. Between magic and golf, she and I have a really strong bond that will last a lifetime. Also, magic has allowed her to be comfortable performing for large audiences. My oldest is a senior in high school, and while she isn't so interested in magic any more, she and I also performed together when she was five and she is not my consultant when I'm working on something new. I love magic and it has been very special for me and my kids. KJ |

It is addicting but satisfying. We all have something we enjoy and can sit back and relax. I spend lots of money with magic but to me it’s like having cash in back. You can sell it if needed.

I think I would rather be obsessed with magic than be some of my coworkers who put off retirement forever because they do not have any other interests and are worried they will be bored to death in retirement. I am no where near retirement myself, however I can tell you I will have no problem keeping myself busy!

Interesting thread to see on the day I started practicing again for the first time in a long while.
I took a long break from performing and even practicing, but held on to all my collection with the idea that one day I would eventually come back to it. I live in Tucson, AZ and the market isn't the greatest for performing here. I did some shows here and there, etc. But after years and years of practicing and not getting as many shows as I would have liked I got frustrated with the whole scene for a time. It got so I hated magic for a while. Not watching others, just practicing or pursuing it for myself. I always said that if I ever move to a better market I'd give it a try again. Fast forward to now and we're moving to the Seattle area within the next few months. I took a deck of cards to work today to practice with during my down time. The love was back. I miss it again. After not touching a deck in... forever, I was surprised at how much I remembered. I can still do a decent DL, Elmsley, overhand false shuffles, etc. Tonight I'm going to go through my collection and select tricks to practice regularly until we move so I'm ready to go. Might even try to perform here before we leave if possible. Yes, magic is hard to quit. I'd never want to quit it forever, but I sure did need a break after setting my goals so high. I'll approach it differently this time. If I get gigs so be it, I was trying to pursue it as a profession before and that is what got me so frustrated. It's nice to be back to the Café btw. Hope you all are doing well. Theodore-

I keep quitting. But keep coming back. I find magic an odd hobby - intensely frustrating and in many ways disappointing, but yet irrisistable.

It is very addicting yes. It's fun to perform and extremely good father-son bonding time when I teach my 8 year old. My wife is used to my hobby (and it gets harder to impress her anymore). Nowadays she usually responses to my tricks with line "being a magicians wife..."
I took a break from magic for almost 10 years, but this hobby is something that keeps getting back. A man can leave magic, but magic never leaves a man, I guess... |

Terrible Wizard, I hope you don't mind me quoting you. That's my perspective exactly.

I think Magic is the best hobby in the world so even though it's addictive and time consuming for you now, you will definitely see the rewards soon. And if you're a professional magician, then it's a great asset to love what you do anyway.
