It's really great to read what people post here- true compassion and understanding. I just read what most everyone posted on the AOL message board, and as always, it's apalling. I have always hoped that the AOL board does not truely represent the feelings of the general public, and this board here on the Café proves that. Steve was a great person, and VERY HIGHLY SKILLED at what he did. I'm a reptile person myself, and I can tell you that if Steve tried the things he did and was anything less than very knowledgable, there is no way he would have survived any time at all. It's unbelievable some of the things that laypeople have always said about Steve (amazing how many "experts" we have out there). He was a great person and a great father. He is already missed!

I was sad to read about this. He brought so much joy to the world and went out at the top of his game. He will be missed but not forgotten!

Australia is a sadder place without Steve Irwin.
It's not just us Aussies that loved him either. According to Google News there are over 2,500 news stories listed on the web less than a day after his tragic death. Video footage of the attack shows Irwin swimming above the stingray on the Great Barrier Reef on Monday when it lashed out and speared him in the heart with its barbed tail, Irwin's manager John Stainton told reporters on Tuesday. "It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest)," Stainton said after watching the footage. "He pulled it out and the next minute he's gone. The cameraman had to shut down," he said. Steve was only 44 years old and, just like screen legends Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, he will be "forever young". We'll always remember him as the knockabout adventurer in khaki shorts, shouting "Crikey!" at every new discovery. He was filming an episode of a new TV series to be hosted by his daughter when he died and, according to the family his daughter Bindi, only 8 years old, will carry on his legacy. Steve's family has been offered a state funeral and, for someone larger than life like 'The Crocodile Hunter', I think it's very fitting. He touched people's lives all over the world because he was so genuinely passionate about what he did. So often I've said during lectures that we magicians need to learn that lesson from Steve. He was a character. He was an icon. He was always there. Now he's not. As Steve said: "I'm a proud Australian, a very, very proud Australian." and Australia's very proud of you too, Steve.

I add my endorsment to what you say, Australia and the world has lost a really good man. I am so touched by the outpouring of grief from our American friends. I am suprised to see so many American magicians who are saddened by this tragic loss - But indeed he did brink his touch of Magic to this sad old world. I like to think that we magicians are doing our bit also to spread a little joy and light to a rather dark world just now. We will miss his cheerfull Crikey. Bless you all |

Isn't it curious that after all the truly dangerous critters Steve Irwin has dealt with and survived intimate brushes with...all the crocs, all the venomous beasties, all the sharp-toothed carnivores...he is killed by a creature that has logged as few as 20 deaths worldwide? I suspect that even the Croc Hunter would have a chuckle over that bit. He personified all that was wonderful about Australia...but, like France's Jacques Cousteau, he will always be a global treasure.

"My number one rule is to keep that camera rolling. Even if it's shaky or slightly out of focus, I don't give a rip. "Even if a big old alligator is chewing me up I want to go down and go, 'Crikey!' just before I die. That would be the ultimate for me."

I waS very sad to hear of his passing. He was so enthusiastic and full of energy, an amazing spokesman for wildlife.
Jay Leno just did a tribute to him on the Tonight Show. He will really be missed. My thoughts go out to his wife, kids and family.

I've watched The Crocodile Hunter ever sice it started and it's just unfortunate that such a passionate and dedicated man was taken away early in his life. But I guess Steve wouldn't have wanted it any other way. He died doing what he loved, educating people about animals and teaching us to care for these creatures and conserve them. My heartfelt condolences reach out to his family.

Australia has taken an almighty hit. Steve was a fantastic man, selfless and hard working and a brilliant ambassador for Australia. It will be a long time before someone able to fill the gaping hole he has left presents themself. He will be sorely missed by all and sundry.

Many a Magician or Comedian will also say that Steve has been A great Australian Icon in which they where able to take just a little of his mannerisms and catch phrases to spice up there performances.
So thanks Steve for giving the World more than just the Crockodile Hunter. Michael |

Steve was asked on Larry King whether he approved of Siegfried and Roy's handling of their animals and Steve was all praises for them... (They'd just replayed that show in memory of Steve on CNN...)
To me, that's vindication for S&R from The Crocodile Hunter himself after some negative comments they'd gotten before about their treatment of the animals in their care a few years back.... So, Steve Irwin has contributed to our Magic Community... On a personal note, I shed tears for this incredible man.... Incredible, 'cause I'm in Malaysia, have only seen him on TV, am NOT into animals, YET I felt such a sadness and loss when I heard he'd just passed way.... I hope his family, especially his daughter, Bindi, will carry on his legacy.... These are sad days indeed.... May you rest in Peace, mate....

This will mean less to overseas Café members, but Australia has just lost another icon.
Racing car driver Peter Brock was killed today whilst driving in a race in WA. http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/rall......976.html Two aussie icons both die in the same week doing what they love. :( |

Only that I'm amazed he got as far as he did!

Steve was a great entertainer and there is a lot for all of us to learn from him. He made "gators" accessible and less threatening to us "regular folks" Magicians can learn a lot from that attitude!

After watching the "Animal Planet" specials...
And all the special commercials with him speaking about his purpose here on Earth... And seeing the very first "Croc. Hunter"... I wonder, seriously, if we all really appreciate the Man that we have lost.... I can't help but choke up when I see him on the T.V. now...Maybe that's because I have a deep and long time love affair with animals...Maybe it's the 'kindred spirit' that is moving me so much... I don't know... All I know is this: Steve Irwin was one of those very special people that was able to make a home in our hearts...It was impossible not to love him, on whatever level he reached you... The world has truly lost an Icon...A Diamond who relished in living in the 'rough'... A family man who never forgot his roots or his duty... I can honestly say that I am heartbroken at his passing. God Bless his family and associates...I can only imagine their pain and grief at losing such a man... In Tears, Terry (a.k.a. Prof. Piper)

I live in Cairns Australia. Steve Irwin was killed at the reef out from here and the whole town was in shock when the news came through that afternoon. He and his family visited here often. When I heard how he died I gasped because about 15 years ago a teenage boy in Innisfail (80 kilometres south) was also killed by a stingray barb to the heart when it jumped over the boat he was fishing in. Neither he nor his father, and I think grandfather he was fishing with realised anything was wrong and he died later at home.
I cannot claim to know Steve Irwin but I have met him. I worked in wildlife shows here in Cairns until the late 90's and twice he and his wife were at Crocodile shows I performed. The first time he was busy talking with reptile keepers after the show and his wife came over to say how much they had both enjoyed the show, and the second time a year later they both came over and said thank you. From those brief encounters I got the impression of very well mannered and decent people. His father I met more often and he has always had a reputation in wildlife circles for being an extremely decent and nice man. Obviously runs in the family. Having spent a decade in wildlife entertainment I think he did amazing things for wildlife - and for the environment in general - with his over the top personality and obvious passion he got people interested in the natural world we live in, and he put his money where his mouth is - spending millions buying up land as nature reserves. I think Steve Irwin left a world better for his having been in it. |
