Here are some tips that were given to me directly from Kevin.
#1: The ball will break if you do not load it into the pad correctly. Yes, it does need to go in a certain way. You need to place the ball in with the holes facing up, so when it hits the ground the holes are facing up not down, this will prevent the ball from breaking.

What if you don't have your ball drilled?

I had one hole drilled in a new ball because the original one that I got with my Bowl-A-Rama cracked. Using only one hole gives it greater structural integrity.

I disagree; I do lengthy runs doing multiple shows per night in the same theater. If the ball hits the same spot on the stage night after night it CAN do damage to the stage.

Well, you can disagree all you want, I was just giving advise from the creator who has performed it thousands of times all over the world. I also have performed it on the same stage for two years straight doing 3 shows a day 6 days a week and never had a problem. I guess it would depend on the stage, but if you are concerned just put down a piece of wood to drop it on.

I didn't mean to offend you, but I am posting personal experience. Take it how you want.

I performed the bowling ball effect at a amusement park for several years. The stage was wood and never had a problem, however I do like taking a thin piece of plywood when I do outside shows.

What a fun routine this is to perform. I also use a small piece of plywood and it works fine.

You didn't offend me, I do agree with you that some stages it could leave dents. Like I said if it is a concern just use a piece of plywood on the stage.

I know that brand new balls come that way, but why would you use one with no holes? I use it for a bowling routine so I need the holes but I guess you probably don't need them if you are not.

But doesn't the audience expect to see the holes?

Semantics.... Smile

Yes, you do draw holes, because otherwise, no one looking at your "circle" would understand that it is suppose to be a ball. Drawing the holes makes it recognizable as a bowling ball. When the big, black ball hits the floor with a resounding THUD!, then it should be apparent to everyone watching that it IS a bowling ball.

But I agreee that the ball has to be easier to handle with some holes drilled into it.

For those of you who drop this onto a piece of plywood, how large of a square are you using? I like Matt's idea of giving it a little lift to augmnent the impact sound. I was just thinking of possibly putting some small feet on the board to add to the resonance.

Thanks,
Dan.

The board that I use is just a standard pre-cut piece of square plywood from Home Depot. I would say that it is about 17" square. I just painted it black and added the stuff to the bottom. Anymore, I only use it when I need to though (when the venue won't let me drop it on the stage.

The theatre that I am working now (3 weeks into a five week run) allows me to let the ball hit the stage. To top it off, I do the production on a covered over orchestra pit, so the sound really gets amplified and it sounds great.

I am really loving bowl-a-rama....so glad I bought it.

I didn't use anything to break the fall on a hard gym floor and cracked my bowling ball. Oops!

I bought another "used" one (it looks new) from a bowling alley for five bucks.

I think I'll put something together like Matthew was talking about. Thanks for the tips!

Hi,

My bowling ball has just got a crack in it. Is the crack likely to get bigger and the ball fall apart fairly soon, or can I just keep using it?
Any experience of this anyone?

Mine has had a crack in it for awhile...I really don't have any idea about how long it will last...we both should be getting it repaired or buying another ball soon...thanks to whomever shared the keep the holes up...I must have missed this on the video...great routine that just gets an audiences attention from the moment that you walk out.
