I was thumbing through Bobo looking for something else, and happened to see a very cute routine by Connie Haden that uses a "$1.35" nested coin set and a Chinese holed coin.
But before I invest $40 in the Johnson Products version of this trick, I'm wondering whether the set has other good uses beyond the apparent vanish of 85 cents. When I get a utility item, I like it to actually have a couple of different uses! SETH

There is a good routine in The Book of John (I or II) by his guest Female magician. The one I remeber from Bobo is where the work is done under a handkerchief, so the ending is just blowing the hank open with no hands, very clean.
The coin set is kind of the ultimate miracle of craftsmenship foiled by obvious method. Perhaps we should be working on getting the last coin to vanish completly. That is, a heel clip and steal into the other hand. |

Thanks, I did see the other $1.35 routine in Bobo, which uses the handkerchief and has a cute substitution of the gaffed half for a real half.
I also thought a lot about your comment of the method being obvious. But I'm not so sure that's true (or perhaps I'm just too optomistic or naive!). I believe your commment might be more applicable to a two-coin set like the Dime & Penny or Scotch & Soda, but when you start with four coins and finish with one, it seems to me that it's much less obvious. Of course, the handling has a lot to do with it. Just for fun, I'm going to pick up an inexpensive $1.35 set and give the Connie Haden routine a try. It also occured to me that I could strengthen the effect by showing the left hand empty at first, then making a fist, doing a L'homme Masque load of the kicker Chinese coin, and proceeding as usual with the $1.35 set from there. As always, my audiences will tell me whether or not it's a good trick! SETH

There's a wonderful coin eating routine in Sid Fleishman's "The Charlatan's Handbook". The gist you eat coins but have to go from small to big...you can kind of follow from there. I think it's a fun premise.
