My concern with this version of the illusion is does it even look good performed? It has been on the market for years and even Owens Magic sells a version. I have never seen it performed in person or on video.
Any experiences? James Adamson
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

Here are some comments from another thread on the Lipan Portable Asrah: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=7
I have not seen it performed other than in the video clip on Steven sight but it's the only cheap, lightweight, portable Asrah I know of. Michael |

(Face: Perhaps you are missing a codex or quicktime update?)
I just watched the video and I have seen it live 2 or 3 times. Every time I watch this effect the performer literally looks like he's just carrying the thing around. It never seems to portray the illusion of weight beneath the foulard as I have yet to see a performer who can perform it well enough to do so. If you do decide on this one, I think the key thing to shoot for is SLOW movements. As slow as you can. The slower the form moves, the heavier it will look. What about something like a Gamalo unit or the Multi-Purpose that can be easily transported? -Chris.

I've had the product demonstrated and, in all honesty, I was not impressed. The handling is awkward and I did not see how to make it truly sellable. Add to this the fact that the demonstrator in the magic store told me he had never performed this - nor does he know anyone who is currently using it in my area (and this is not a new item to the store!) Unfortunately this was just another reason why I mostly buy supplies online.
Good luck in your quest. Vinny |

Zombie was the same way when it first appeared on the scene. There were those who could make it float and those who... well, let's just say they couldn't. Where is Joe Karson when you need him?

I never saw it performed..but I hear that Goldfinger and Dove made it look good.. howver.. I recently was called to help a friend with his illuusion show and he had the Jim Sommers model in a corner int he basement, unused. I just spent an hour playing with it. I could make the levitation part look quite good.. but the vanish was a whole different story..
I couldn't think of ANY way to make it look like anything but exactly what it was.. and there was a HUGE lump under teh cloth at the finish of the effect.. I susppose you could just drop the form on the floor behind the table .. but I can't imagine that would look like anything but what it is as well.. The magician I was helping out and I came to the same conclusion.. sell it and buy another illusion.. |

I have it and I use it after my Gamolo levitation. Best performed in a theater setting.

Thanks guys for all the posts. When the assistant makes her escape, she is still in the base, right?

I ask because I noticed the description on http://www.stevensmagic.com said the entire illusion packed to weigh only 4 lbs, so that would probably not leave much room for anything other than that contained with the cloth itself.

No base or other mode of escape. It is up to you to add.

Hello Michael,
Good to see you here. Why don't we recommend an assistant on a very effective diet? Zap! She's gone! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I agree with Chris, it looks like he's just carrying it around. A few years ago I bought several atsge illusions from a guy in Ohio. The portable asrah was with it. I wasn't that impressed with the set up. As a matter of fact, it fell apart. Gotta use the rigging. Performed the asrah only a few times and find it to be one of the most awesome illusions out there.

Hello,
I am already doing that act in my cruise ships show and that´s having a very good answer from the audience. I don´t use my asrah as a zombie at all. I have a gimmck to use it with no hands, except at the end of the routine, of course. I use more props as well. A deceptive base to hide the girl and a levitation hoop. She is laying on the bed, then two of my assistants cover her and lift her on the air, and I just leave her floating on the air, and then very slowly she starts to go up and go down, from one side to other side, etc. Until she is vanished. I am happy with this illusion. But I must to say that is not just the portable asrah. I hope I help you. I apologize for my english. |

The Stevens advertisement is misleading in that way. The wording makes it seem like they give you everything you need to start performing this illusion right away. They should be upfront and tell the buyer you need to purchase or create something for the actual vanish of the assistant.

You might check out Tilford's site for the European Asrah I did have the opportunity to "play" with one of these and found it mechanically sound. I think the right performer could create an effective illusion of floating with this but it will require some thought and practice.
