I am starting this thread as a spin-off from the thread in which we lamented the lack of a WEAR 2006. We have agreed that it is too late for 2006, but there is 2007 ahead of us. I propose a date for WEAR 2007 of Saturday, October 27, 2007. This is prior to Halloween, the 81st anniversary of Houdini's death, and is during National Magic Week.
The "rules" would be the same as in Clyde's effort of 2005. Performers should perform an escape of some kind in front of at least two witnesses on October 27. Prior to the event, performers would register their intentions with the organizer, giving their name (or stage name), location, local time for the performance, and the nature of their escape. Performers should make some attempt to document their performance via photography or video. After the performance, witnesses should submit signed witness forms through the mail to make the escape official. WEAR 2005 was great fun, with small performances given in front of the minimum of witnesses, and huge performances given in front of literally thousands. It was very much a grass-roots event, and I enjoyed it very much. I would like to volunteer my services as an organizer. I am willing to donate space on my web site to WEAR 2007. This is better than setting up a new web site, because I will keep my site up for years to come, as long as I am performing, at my own expense. If we put up a new site, we have to figure how to pay for it in years to come. Looking back on WEAR 2005, many individual performers generated good press from the event, but the national and international press didn't seem to want to cover the event as a whole. With this much lead time, things might be different. I don't think that we can count on the world record folks, WEAR 2007 can just stand as a thing of beauty all its own. Let's say that the deadline for making a decision is Halloween 2006. If there is solid support by that time, I will either take it on, or defer to someone who has a better capacity to make it into a bigger event. Yours, Paul |

It is great to see such enthusiasm!
I have a better idea than using my personal website. Our I.B.M. Ring will meet this weekend, and I will ask formal permission to host the WEAR 2007 pages on our Ring's web site. I think that this has at least three advantages. First, the site is that of a nonprofit organization that promotes the magical arts, not the personal website of an individual performer. Second, participation under the umbrella of an I.B.M. Ring associates WEAR 2007 with the I.B.M., meaning that there will be at least some coverage in TLR, and that it will be possible to call for participation by other I.B.M. members. Third, I.B.M. members participating in WEAR 2007 can tie their escapes to Ring events or a collective Ring performance. For escape artists who don't have their own crew, I.B.M. Ring volunteers can increase the production value of their escapes. Of course, you do not have to be a member of the I.B.M. to participate in WEAR 2007. OK, so how do you participate? Send an email to drwilson@memoryelixir.com. Include in your message: Name (Stage Name if preferred) City/State or Province Country Type of escape (can be TBA in initial registration) Time of performance (can be TBA in initial registration) email address personal website If no one here has any strong objection to associating WEAR with the I.B.M., and if our Ring members approve this, I will post an initial WEAR 2007 web page on our Ring's website next week. Yours, Paul |

Dear Wolfie,
Sure did! I have a draft of the web page put together. As soon as our Ring approves the idea (we meet tomorrow, September 16), I'll post the link to the page and we are off and running. Yours, Paul |

I hope that we can get people thinking about how to make WEAR II better than WEAR I. I persoanlly felt taht WEAR one was great on several levels, but the man on the street has no clue. I don't know that television coverage is a real posibility unless some knows a big name TV producer on name to name basis. I am wondering what else could be done to gain national (International) recognition?
Also does anyone know how many of us really [articipated in WEAR? I think that info got a wee bit lost at the last minute. According to clydes page, only about half of the 50 or so actually reperted in. I think the number has to be higher. Lets make this work! also, Wolfie, do you still want videos of the WEAR escapes? I could send mine in if you wish. Cliff

Yes Please Cliff. I have a few good idea's for the DVD. If your vid is a bit bigger than 10 Megs, please send it to me via http://www.yousendit.com
I am actually waiting for everyone to send theirs to me but no one seems to want to. If you can include pictures and articles I will be adding them to the vid too. Thanks Regards Wolflock

I think there are a number of things that might be done to make WEAR 2007 bigger and better. We have more lead time, and many veterans of the first event who had a great time.
Here's how I think of WEAR. It's anarchy. There will be a central registration and clearinghouse for information, press releases, and so on, but it is up to each participant to make what they can of it. Many participants from last time have much more experience at getting better coverage and larger audiences than I have ever seen. That's great. They can use the idea that they are part of something larger to make the story more interesting. Similarly, somewhere there will be a kid in a garage escaping from a Siberian Chain with a digital camera and three friends. They are part of the story also. Last time, a couple of people that I talked to had some terrific ideas that just didn't happen. These would have changed the scale of the event greatly. I will get in touch with these folks and let them know that there is now an entire year to work on their ideas. I gained a great deal from the first WEAR. I finally put everything I needed together for a mobile show: lights, backdrop, sound system. I developed a new escape that has been very effective theatrically over the past year. I got very good press coverage. I also attracted the attention of another performer; this summer, we did a dozen shows together. If everyone does their best, this will be a great event. As far as reaching the man on the street, that might be a bit much. Walk around a mall and ask people if they have ever heard of Criss Angel. While you are at it, ask them if they can name the Vice President or the Secretary of State. I hope, at least, that WEAR will get coverage in the magic magazines in advance of the event. I would like to see a large number of participants and better post-event documentation. It's up to each of us to make WEAR 2007 a success. Onward and upward! Yours, Paul |
