Guinness or not, RHR or not, WEAR 2007 is going to rock the world. I have settled on my escape, to be performed for the first time on October 27, 2007: The Spider's Embrace.
More details later. Way later. A number of other WEAR participants are still keeping their cards to their chests, as it were, in part because they don't want to be imitated. I expect, when they finally reveal what they will be doing, we will all be stunned. Onward and upward! Yours, Paul |

Paul,
Do we have a publication date for the Linking Ring feature?

I will be submitting it in early January. I expect that we would see publication in March or April, which is just about the right time to build participation. Too much closer to October, and people wouldn't have enough time to find a venue, plan an escape, and work on their own publicity.

Hi Everyone:
I would definately like to be a part of Wear 2007! Paul I did send you my register info. but can't remember if I gave you my email. If I didn't, sorry, and you can take it from my sig. I'd also like to say that I'm a magician by trade but I like to add in escapes as much as I can. My favorite currently is the SJ Escape! I have a great idea for a original ( I think its original, Never heard of anyone trying it yet) but everyone keeps telling me I'm out of my mind. I'd love to share it with a few of you once we get to know each other. To date I have just been doing a straight SJ escape. Any ways you could suggest to beef it up would be great. I like the idea of adding some chains etc. I have one other question as well. What have been peoples best methods for getting publicity and promoting Wear? I have done press releases in the past but without success. Any tips you could pass on would be greatly appreciated. I'm really excited about being apart of this event and want to make the most of it. I'll try to get my Wear Page up by the first part of next week-mid week depending on everything with the holidays. Thanks a lot in advance and Merry Christmas! |

The best publicity I have ever received is from doing publicity stunts. Press organizations get press releases all the time. Why should they run yours? Here's why:
1. You have written a newspaper article in the exact form that they use. They don't have to rewrite it. They can just run it. Moreover, you have submitted it in electronic form so they don't have to type it. Think about it. They are at the newspaper office, wondering how they are going to fill the space between the ads. They get an email from you that they can just paste in. Moments later, the phone rings, and someone wants to meet with them to see if they can come up with an idea for a story to cover their event. What do you think they do? 2. You have great photos. They are interesting, fun, and tell a story all by themselves. 3. The press release is a teaser for a free public event of some kind with local interest. Two things that people understand here in Maine are the extreme danger of the icy ocean waters of the Gulf of Maine, and how nasty big animal traps are, especially if you can't see them. I have used these both as hooks for publicity stunts. I have tried a few other things that require thinking, and they don't work. You want no-brainer, stupid, dangerous things that anyone can understand. This is familiar ground at the Café. Please see: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=18 Yours, Paul |

LOL...
You want no-brainer, stupid, dangerous things that anyone can understand. Yes sir, Dr. Wilson is right. And that's how all of us ended up in this end of the Café!

Here is the release sent to The Linking Ring, together with some terrific photos. Please feel free to adapt the text of this release for your own WEAR 2007 press releases. This has been written exclusively for TLR, and is written to conform to their format and interests (specifically, the participation of I.B.M. members).
Yours, Paul ________________ Escape Artists Plan Worldwide Event for October 2007 Escape artists around the world are planning the second Worldwide Escape Artist Relay (WEAR) for Saturday, October 27, 2007. WEAR 2007 will circle the globe as participants escape from handcuffs, chains, straitjackets, and other restraits while facing drowning, impalement, explosives or the humiliation of public failure. The participating escape artists hope that the event will restore the art of escape to its rightful place in the public imagination. This is expected to be the largest coordinated performance by escape artists in history. The first event in October 2005 attracted over fifty performers, and earned a mention in Ripley's "Expect...The Unexpected" as well as extensive media coverage. WEAR 2007 began as a idea among escape artists on the internet, and has already attracted a large number of well-known performers. These include holders of world records (Cindini, Matt The Knife, and David Straitjacket), headline acts from Cannon's Escape Artist Convention (Kristen Johnson, Kevin Ridgeway, and Thomas Solomon), performers with extensive television credits (Steve Baker, Andrew Basso, Michael Berends), and the resident escape artist of the Houdini Museum in Scranton, PA (Dorothy Dietrich). I.B.M. Ring 362 in Bangor, Maine, is hosting the registration page on its web site. Escape artists from eight different countires have already registered. I.B.M. members registered to date include Nemo Turner (T.V.P. for Quebec), Michael Berends (Ring 66), David the Cryptic (Ring 39), Cliff Gerstman (Ring 96), Kristen Johnson (Ring 55), Margarette LeClaire (Ring 16), Cynthia Morrison (Ring 117), Malcolm Norton (Ring 25), Zach Paige (Ring 327), Kevin Ridgeway (Ring 55), Ed Underwood (Ring 187), Paul Weatherbee (Ring 2100), Dr. Wilson (Ring 362), and Bob Zoerman (Ring 211). Registration is open to all at no cost. To register for WEAR 2007, see the website for Ring 362 (www.ibmring362.org) or call Paul Szauter at (207)-288-0388. |

TLR ran the first, second, and fourth paragraphs of the release above in the February 2007 issue on page 111. Oddly, they didn't run any of the fabulous photos that people sent me. I will post the photos on a web page linked to the WEAR 2007 registration page over the next week or so.
In another development, the new Board of I.B.M. Ring 362 has decided to build a full Ring show around my WEAR escape. We have not yet confirmed the venue, but we are probably going to be able to make a fairly big deal out of this, in local terms. Onward and upward! Yours, Paul |

Hi Doc,
Great work as always, I have not seen TLR yet, but I am looking forward to it. Like your ring, my ring (96) will be doing a shopw around WEAR. This makes it a lot easier on me, as I can emcee the show, and only do a few schtick and then the big escape. I am thinkning I will have to change my actual escape, and I cannot imagine a spiker table fitting on that stage. I will let you know what I come up with as time goes on. Cliff

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to announce that WEAR 2007 has just hit 50 registrants. There is no particular significance to the number, but the big news is the act that has just registered as participant #50.
Ladies and gentlemen, audience members, pros, amateurs, big names and wannabes, WEAR 2007 is very pleased to announce: THE RETURN OF PASTOR CLYDE! Check out the registration page for the Worldwide Escape Artist Relay 2007! If you are not yet registered, please do so. Onward and upward! Yours, Paul |

I'm up for WEARing again this year, but I'd prefer to hold off on registering for the moment as I'm in the throes of re-developing my act into a double act, so would prefer to register once things are in place.

Helen- that's great! Not to sound boastful but I love it and find that I use it in almost every act. Glad you have found it helpful.
