Do you think you could take someone, of average intelligence, and with a dream team of magicians, teach them to be the worlds most famous magician?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I think it can be proven that you can do it with some of "lesser intelligence". Matter of fact it HAS been done.

Not that he's dense, but, Stuart Townsend learned some good stuff for the motion picture Shade.
Should he choose to pursue a career in magic, his looks and a strong magic act could land him a show in Vegas.

I guess it mainly depends on the determination of the "subject".
you can have the foremost experts around you if you are not willing to work or don't show any interest whatsoever for the subject. but let's just assume that determination and interest is present.i say "why not?" with a very well thought out character , a number of effects specially picked out and some very well designed acts I think it would be very possible what you are implying Tommy. but then , that's just my oppinion. -Matt

The world's most FAMOUS magician? That would maybe rely more on a crack team of promoters, wouldn't it? Hollywood proves time and again that they can turn anyone into a household name.
The world's BEST magician?? Without true innovativeness in their makeup, they would only be as good as the sum of the parts (the teachers). I'd say they'd need to rise above that themselves.

With the DVDs, that we can all get now, we can each put a sort of personal dream team together. I think I find it very hard to be a sum of the parts of my DVD collection on card magic. I am more of a sum of the scratches on them.

Fame is managed by forces other than talent and skill.
Outside of the media effects, it does help to project something that audiences want to relate to. Preferably in a positive way.

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

That's why I said famous not best. There seems to me, to always be one magician who is the most famous of his time, the best is more open to debate.

There are many jugglers with more skill than me that will never perform. The desire to perform is like having a fire in your belly, and without that necessary fire it auint gonna happen.

Anyone who wants to stay on top of the business who thinks he can do it by himself is making a serious judgmental error. This is true in ANY business.
Do any of you think that Tiger Woods stays on top of his game without excellent coaching? Pavarotti still has a singing coach. The best keep their game sharp. I don't think you could take a complete "empty barrel" and make him into a great magician, though. There would be a point at which he would fail.

Once you hit the top, the only way is down. Tiger Woods has a strong foundation, because he remembers the basics. Just like a carpenter who needs to keep his chisels sharp; learning new stuff always starts with the basics.
Magician's need more than tricks and a little luck. If you want a career in show business, but, you skip over stagecraft- well, I hate to tell you, but, you missed a spot.

That assumes that the top has a fixed limit. I'm not a huge fan of figure skating, but I am old enough to remember when a double spin was considered state of the art. Now a triple is necessary and quadruples are not entirely uncommon.
Creative people with good consultants will continue to expand our art. But it takes both. And it takes a good, solid understanding of the fundamentals. Here's an example. Duke Ellington got very far in music without being able to read a note. Then he decided it would be good to learn how to read and how to write down what he could hear inside his head. So he went back to school. A lot of his friends warned him. They said, "Man! Like I know a cat who had chops you wouldn't believe who went to music school and when he got out, he couldn't play a note, because he was too busy thinking about what he was doing." (I'm still looking for that cat -- I don't think he exists. A fundamental knowledge of your art never hurts anyone!) Well, he did it. I don't know where he took his classes -- could have been at Berklee -- but he did it, and not only did it not hurt his playing (big surprise there!!!) his compositions became much more effective. The same is true of magic. If you understand the fundamentals of stagecraft, it will improve your show. This is not only true of your stage magic. It is also true of your close-up. You learn prop management, for example.

I'd like it better if one of the guy's I consider "the best magicians" could be elevated to most famous status. But none of the magicians that I consider to be great, think of themselves as "the best". And, that seems to be a prerequisite.

To become someone like Copperfield (if you don't mind my using "the C-word") requires an immense amount of dedication and drive. If you don't have the drive, you won't make it.
It's that way in all the performing arts. You don't get to be on top by skill alone. You must have drive and determination.

Bill,
You are so right. I can't tell you how many times I've seen Copperfield do an effect that I didn't care for. Yet, no matter my prejudice, David always did it better than most.
