Any time you are asked to open for someone, get the deal in writing and have an entertainment attorney review the contract.
It's for YOUR protection. Simple things to watch for: Does the contract have the legal name(s) and address(es) of the people and the company that you are contracting with ON the contract? Does it list the dates and times that you will be performing? Does it list the props and backstage ammeneties that will be provided for you? Does it spell out YOUR financial liabilities and responsibilities and to whom those responsibilities go (the owners of the venue or the other perfomer?) Is there an exit clause (a clause that spells out how you can step away from this deal)? Is there a termination clause? (one that defines the reasons for which YOU may be fired, including how much notice they have to give you) Are you to be covered under the venue's, the other performer's or solely your own performance liability insurance? And if it is a combination - how is that spelled out? See why you need an entertainment lawyer to look this thing over? It's for your OWN protection! Lee Darrow, C.H.
