I was performing at a restaurant last night. An interesting thing happened. At one point I brought out the thumb cuffs. I asked this one person to lock me in. He ended up locking me pretty good. I wasn't able to get the extra space needed. The reason was this guy that was securing me was a cop! Luckily I keep a spare key in my back pocket just in case (this was the first time in 10 years that I had to use it).

That's always a good thing to know. When I perform the 100ft rope escape, I make a joke about eagal scouts, and I usually if they had any kind of knot training they will say so. that helps.

Very good point. I had some guys who had done a type of special forces training in the Old South Africa (Apartheid time)in the army. They knew how to bind someone properly. It took me quite a while but I got out of what they bound me in. They have since become good friends of mine. One came back from Europe about a month ago. He had seen an EA (i think in Holland). He told me that the guys show was very entertaining but he does not think the guy would have gotten out of what they had bound me in. I told him that the guy probably could. But he was convince d that the guy would not and nothing I could say would convince him otherwise. To cut the long story a bit shorter, unless you are willing to deal with a lot of pain and sweat, I agree, know your audience. (As difficult as that can be). And try to learn from those who know what they are doing so that you don't get stuck in that situation again.

Well done to having a way out mrbilldentertainer.

I learned about the spare key the hard way. Way back when, I was doing the same trick, and I always put the cuffs on a spectator first and do a bit of by play with it. The one time, I didn't have the key with me! The poor guy's fingers were turning blue because his buddy decided to push down on them making them close even tighter (I hadn't put the safety lock on yet). I now keep a set of my cuff and restraint keys on my regular key chain too. I had to get a paper clip and pick the lock to get this guy out. Oh the things we learn the hard way!
