Last night I did some more joint work witha fellow member fo the Café here. We were invited out to do some stuff at a scouting jamboree. We were to perform some for the kids and showcase our stuff for the 60 plus leaders in the envent.
The problem... After darkness fell thee temperature dropped like a stone. For my part I do not do as many sleights as my pard so my hands are not as big a problem. But my young pard, darn near froze to death... His hands almost became unworkable. Any suggestions on what others have used outdoors in cold to keep hands workable during the cold season. Perhaps something that he could keep in his pockets to grab some heat between routines? Any input greatly appreciatied. I can't see the "Nothing Up my Mitten" idea playing very well...

Check out camping/sporting goods supply stores. They sell a variety of instant (often reusable) warmers that are either air activated or disc (zinc?? iron??) activated. Not sure that this is the best source, model or price, but you can see some examples of what I'm talking about here: http://www.warmers.com .

There's a direct link to their products. I used to use these when I went skiing. They're the shiznit! Most will last about 8 hours (some more). Would probably be perfect for you. Robert PS: If it was THAT cold, why not suggest performing INSIDE? ![]()

As luck would have it you can find little pocket warming bags at Wal-Mart. During the winter mouths you can find them at the checkout. They work chemically, just give them a squeeze and I think they are good up to four hours.

Wimps. We had to walk to school in -40 degree weather. Even the wolves were shivering as they snuffled in our tracks....

Skinny as a racing snake?
Where can I see these snake races, they sound cool! Yes, when you have very little meat on your bones, it gets really cold, really quick. |

Those hand warmers from Wal-Mart and such can be a real boon. If you buy a pair of those gloves that have the mitten attachment (it can be pulled over your fingers or pulled off and velcroed to the rest of the glove) you can stuff some of the warmers into the mitten part or into the glove part. Both help. I've done this as a juggler and I was clued into it by some guitarists. While it doesn't get nearly as cold here in NC as I remember it being in PA...I've still gotten numb fingers and that can be a serious problem when you still have a multitude of hours until the festival day is complete.
Perhaps a baked potato would work too. My parents like to tell me about how they and their parents would bake a potato in the morning and take it along with them for the rest of the day since potatoes like to hold heat and they found them tasty. I'm not a big fan of the potato's taste though.
Existence exists...let's build something beautiful off of that.

I can't believe you whiners...
I grew up north of the north pole, had to walk to school uphill both ways barefoot. It was so cold the polar bears wouldn't come out except for a couple but they were really tough. One of them got a hold of you and you could expect to be late for school....you didn't dare, you would p.o. a nun with a ruler. It was so cold Bill Clinton once visited and he had his zipper up. But the sure way to tell if it is cold is if you hear the kee birds. They have a very distinctive call...kee, kee, keerist its cold! |
