Sticky balls can be very uncomforatable when doing your cups & balls routine Posted: Sep 23, 2006 6:03pm Quote: On 2006-09-23 17:47, cfrye wrote: If you go with a slightly smaller core and larger yarn, you can have your crochet person (crocheter? crocheteuse?) use a larger needle, which adds more flat spots to the balls' surface, which in turn reduces the ball's tendency to roll. Curt, do you crochet? You have some fine points there that you offered. The two tough things about making crochet balls is getting the tension right and even stitches, it's not hard to double stitch which creates knots. We've had specific requests where customers want the same size stitch and tension of the crochet on the ball, but a little less roll. There are 2 ways to accomplish this, 1. Instead of balls, use wood beads, this are slightly out of round but not noticible when you crochet around them. 2. Using a piece of emery paper slightly sand down a slight flat spot in 4 equal areas of the ball, this will not be noticible after the crochet, but will eliminate some roll. Jake

I hadn't realised that there was so much work in the balls Jake!
The choice is all down to personal preference, but the place you're working might also influence your choice of ball. The MF balls have less of a tendency to roll of the table - which is a plus if you're working outside. I prefer crochet over Monkey Fists, but my favourites are the Jedinat leather mini baseballs.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Jake is correct. We talked about the MF balls and they are difficult for me specifically with the elevator move. Other than that I don't have an issue with them.
I use little tiny 3-wrap purple ones with Jake's mini pf cups. For my larger cups, I'm currently using computer mouse balls that I cover in felt. Yes, indeed. They are very heavy but I got used to them right away. They are 1" or perhaps 1.125"

Back to the original question about the Ickle Pickle cups. I just got off the phone with Steve Bender, who is the owner of Ickle Pickle. The cups in question are DEFINITELY aluminum.

Thanks Bill...that was very kind of you to look into that for me. I went ahead and purchased the Bazar regular copper cups at penguin (along with Gazzo's new DVD, which I wasnt aware was already out). This is a very informative thread for me, and I thank everyone who is involved for cueing me in on such technicalities.
~Jonathan PS: Next time someone talks to this Steve character, tell him to change the freakin' description. He may get a lot more business if he does.

As far as Bazar copper cups go, I just got a set from an ebay dealer for less than the price in the Penguin link and they came with free shipping. I ordered them in late July/early August. They were back-ordered, though, and I had to wait about five or six weeks. I'll bet with the copper prices going up, they won't be offered at $32.99 again soon.
They're good cups for me. I'm a beginner and a cheapskate. The size and weight are fine. There are very slight (to me) flaws that a collector would hate but which don't matter the least as far as performing a routine goes. They're fabulous compared to the no-name aluminum $20 ones I started out with.

Richard...
We cheapskates are so much more appreciative of lower quality stuff that the people that spend thousands of dollars on magic they never use. Thanks for your input, and that makes my confidence in my purchase much higher. Just for everyone's information, I'll be using Gazzo's routine with these cups, but with lemons or limes instead of oranges. I got to handle Gazzo's cups when I met him 2 weeks ago, and those things were so heavy. But at the same time, they felt so great. I can understand the worlds best cups and ball-er paying that much for great cups, but I don't think I would ever resort to spending so much. Quality means a lot to me, but not if I'm not making hundreds of dollars in tips a night. Okay...getting off topic here. Thanks for the info Richard. ~Jonathan PS: Here are some pictures from when I met him 2 weeks ago (kinda grainy, but the lighting was horrible...it was raining): http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c167/JontonofSpades/Magic/

I just got off the phone with the people who run that web site. This is useless. It's not Ickle Pickle. It's some magician in California. The people who answer the phone have no information at all about the products. I should have made it clear that Steve Bender is the owner of Ickle Pickle Magic. It isn't Steve who wrote the description. It's the numbskull who owns the web site who did it. Steve does not own the web site. They are a dealer for his products. He was not pleased to learn that they had messed up the description. He told me that the fellow who runs the site had purchased each item shown and photographed it himself, so he (the owner of the web site) should have known they weren't plastic. You will find that the longer you work with cups and balls, the more you will want to have a nice set to work with. The Bazar cups are a good beginner - intermediate set. When you really get your routine down, and you decide to go for some bigger loads, then you will want some bigger cups.

I recently purchased the Ickle Pickle Chop Cup and I'm happy with the purchase. The gimmick is a little strong, so it's definitely got a margin of error to work with. That said, it looks good and appears to be well made.

We can even do bounce/no bounce versions of the crochet which a few people have requested and love As in the Bounce/No Bounce Ball routine? That would be great, if the balls were white and about the size of golfballs! I hate the most popular ones, because a black ball doesn't exactly catch the eye. |
