I suspect the whole 'Vent Week' premise was meant to be something of a gag but it did seem to take on an energy of its own. Thursday night Letterman said his mom had called to comment on the shows which was, he said, a first in all his years on the air.
I enjoyed them all up especially Jeff Dunham and Todd Oliver both of whom I had not seen before. I liked how Dunham 'switched sides' to shake hands after his set. It looked professional. I'd have to go with Ronn Lucas as my favourite though. He did callbacks from Letterman's monologue and seemed most hip to the premise of Vent Week. The audiences reactions were great to hear. No doubt a lot of them were seeing Vent for the first time. I hope this national exposure provides some tailwind for other Vents.

I saw the clips online. I enjoyed them. Willy Tyler hasn't really changed much at all - he's like the dick clark of the vent world. Ronn Lucas sort of seemed like he was forgetting his lines in that there were quite a few 'awkward pauses'.. I don't know if there was audience laughter that he could hear but the studio mikes weren't picking up(?). Scorch is an awesome puppet though. His animatronics really bring him to life! Todd Oliver was funny, but I don't know how that dog feels about the whole thing. Jay - I don't know.. that puppet looks like he bought it from a mall vendor.. or just stitched together some fun fur - it looked cheap and it kind of detracted from his show (IMO). I would love the chance to see all of these peoples full shows live. Vent week was a neat idea - there isn't much of it on TV nowadays. We need a new 'super famous' vent or puppet presence again. Will there ever be another 'bergen' or 'Winchell'?

Jeff CAN switch sides because he can easily take his hand out of Walter and just move to the other side, since he's standing. Willy Tyler can't because he's seated and Lester was on his right knee. Jay Johnson and Ronn can't because their right hand is INSIDE the soft puppet (not a hard figure, with which you can easily get your hand out).
IMHO, I think Willy, Jay, and Ronn didn't look unprofessional just because they can't shake with their right hand the moment Letterman approached them--because of the physical limitations they were in at the time. |
