Mine is either 2 Card Transpo or Bite Quarter.
Been a busker since I was 14 from San Diego; Don Driver was my mentor along with many others like Jimmy Talksalot, Sleeveless (Stephen Sloan), Bob Elliott.

I like when David Blaine reveals the name of a loved one for the girl who's friend had passed away, and then tells her that "he'll always be with you"... It showed how much impact magic can have on a person, how much power a real magician can have.
But that was from "magic man", not "street magic."

Greetings and Salutations,
The cups and balls. Plays for anywhere from a couple of minutes to 20 minutes or more. Allows for your personality to show through. Can be entertainingly performed silently, to music, with patter, a storyline, or, if you're good and you've been at it long enough, you can freelance it. It has appearances, disappearances, transpositions, solid-through-solid, transformations, and more. You can do it close up or in the round, if you're clever enough. Sometimes it's the only thing I do (along with some assorted bits of business), if the crowd is small, gets great audience reactions, and I still earn a decent hat with just this one trick, which, as noted above, is several magic effects taken together to form a complete show. Just my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV. Joe in KC |

I agree with MagiUlysses on this one, although three card monte and vanishing ciggarettes/silks come in on top of my lists also.

Without a doubt cups and balls was, is and will be the classic of the street performance.

At night time, my favorite street magic is the Portable flamethrower. It's a great opener for a cigarette routine as it gets lots of attention and makes them beg for more.

Wow. Hard choice to make. I love the various types of Hot Rod tricks and always have one on me. As simple as it is, it gets great reactions every time. I love doing bill switches on the street. Third Degree Burn is great, too. But right now, I'd have to say the one that gets the greatest reactions and that needs no setup and can be used with all objects borrowed...is the Wayne Houchin/Criss Angel Quarte Thru Soda Can. That is smooth and brilliant and has a high freakout factor!! Right now, that's probably my favorite.

Stigmata is getting me great reactions lately, considering it's simplicity it's definitely not disappointing.

Greetings and Salutations,
Common advise is to be very, very, very cautious when playing with anything that resembles gambling effects on the street. While I haven't seen it personally, I've heard tales of innocent magi being taken to the cross-bar hotel. I believe that both effects are illegal in certain locales. If you were going to do those effects, I think I would use a Jumbo Monte like Harry Anderson's and get the School for Scoundrel's Jumbo Shells, and then present both effects using story lines or demonstrating how you were taken by a con man. And, I'm thinking, even if it is innocent and above board, and a copper walks in while you're taking in your hat, the whole show could be misconstrued. All in all, I think I'd stick to magic classics and stay away from anything that even smacked of gambling. Just my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV Joe in KC |

I understand what you are mentioning Joe. I love doing the 3 Card Monte and the Shell Game many areas. I only do them for entertainment as a guessing game with no money involved.

Mine would be a floating bill or the hummer card. They draw crazy attention and you can get away with just one trick, if you don't wanna perform more at that time by telling them you lost too much energy trying to do that.

3 card monte is great, if you have a table.
What I lately love to perform, is Jumping Gemini(Wilson's version) and reset with a hook. Simple Switch by Paul Harris has got me reactions beyond any expectation. Well worth the hard work. Of course, I will second most of your suggestions also. I just wanted to add a little variety. -Matt

Just about any routine found on Gregory Wilsons' On the Spot is gonna get you great results. All are basically 'impromptu' and most can be done with the money in your/ or the specs pockets or just a few things grabbed off a nearby table. Some of my favorites include: Quick Silver, Sponge Napkins, Glossy Finish, Questionable Trick and his updated version of ReCap from the Paul Harris AoA series of books. On the Spot is now out on DVD, you just can't go wrong from easy-ish, hard hitting, pack small-play big, impromptu street magic. Highest Recommendations!
Regards, Barrett James
