What would ye like t' know, Dean? Raleigh-Durham is home to one of the finest IBM Rings in the world. You're a few scant miles from a very active SAM Assembly. The area hosts a popular and well-stocked magic shop going on 30+ years of service to the area. Shipments in and out of the area are simplified by regional FED-EX and UPS Hubs and an international airport. Cost of living is fair, housing in Durham is fairly affordable, income potential in the area is excellent, taxes are out of control, the city, county and state governments are either corrupt or incompetent (depending on who you talk to), traffic is deplorable and within ten years the dominant language will be Spanish. Durham is surrounded by three of the top universities in the country and is a major technology and medicine research hub...which means a higher than average income per capita. We're home to the current Stanley Cup Champions and three championship level college basketball teams. Durham is in the heart of a thriving movie and theatre production center. As a magical performer, you're among some pretty tough and well-established competition...but, you won't find a more open, supportive group of serious entertainers outside of The Magic Castle.
What else do ya need?

That was VERY helpful Skip! I am mostly interested in what it's like as a place to live, what are the good (Rural areas, not in the city itself) neighborhoods etc. We are eyeing a house in the Durham historic district. What are the property taxes like there? Arts district? Is it liberal, conservative? I seldom perform any more, making most of my 'entertainment' income as a pscyhic reader, so the competition will not be affected by me What is the weather like there, snow, etc-
Oh, can you possibly tell me the name of the local daily newspapers? I want to contact them and get a few copies, maybe a mail subcription for a few months. We are taking our time. I REALLY appreciate the info you volunteered!! What's the local magic shop? Do they have a web site?

I spent a week there. Nice place, easy to get around. I found several nice coffee shops with local entertainment. The neighborhood I stayed was super neighborly. If your looking for action, it's probably not the best choice.

Individual state income tax is 6%-8% depending on status. Sales tax is 7%. Property taxes in Durham are currently $1.37 per $100 assessment; Durham County is $.81 per $100 assessment.
The local magic shop is The Magic Corner, currently owned by Jon Ferrante. The shop is located in Raleigh. Website is http://www.themagiccorner.com For the record, Jon is one of the most trustworthy and honest people I know. Durham is definitely a liberal-centered town. Chapel Hill, an adjoining town to Durham and home to the Univ. of North Carolina, is a major BASTION of liberal thought. They are sooooo liberal that the town council passed an official governmental act condemning President Bush and his Iraqi action. They're so liberal, I'm not allowed past their city limits until I remove the "Bush" stickers from my van's rear window. (Okay, I'm stretching THAT last one...but it's CLOSE!) Durham isn't quite that bad...but it's close. Raleigh and Durham both have a thriving and growing arts district and councils. Both have a very actve theatre and concert season. There is a very active international artistic sub-community as well. The weather (aside from the higher per capita income) was my main reason for moving here. June through August are VERY HOT and VERY HUMID...but the rest of the year is wonderful. We have a long Indian Summer with balmy temps from September through December. January and February get a little nippy with daily averages around 40...nights around freezing. Snow is a rarity...although the nearby Blue Ridge mountains offer some FANTASTIC skiing and snowboarding. Spring hits in March and temperatures become reasonable again. Hurricanes tend t' knock on our door now and then but they generally pass us by without much harm. The beaches are beautiful and plentiful at about an hour+ drive on very modern highways. Hope ya like trees cause we have trees everywhere! From the air it looks like Raleigh and Durham are nestled in the center of this massive forest of trees. Personally, I like it. A friend from Idaho said it made her claustrophobic. The two principal newspapers are the Durham Times-Herald http://www.timesheraldonline.com and the Raleigh News & Observer http://www.newsobserver.com , both self-proclaimed liberal publications, if it matters. Anything else? Dang...I'm gonna charge this time to the Welcome Wagon! Ask away! Glad to help!

I grew up in Durham, spent about 20 years there. I definitely enjoyed. I'll contribute some more to this thread later on now that I know it's here, but at the moment, it's off to bed!
Definitely a good blend of peace and quiet along with some other good features to be found around town. Kevin

Action? We have action!! The WWE hosts many of its major televised wrestling bouts in nearby Geensboro (ooo! ahhh!). Durham is home to the Durham Bulls; farm team for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. We're also home to the world champion NHL Carolina Hurricanes and the NFL Carolina Panthers are just a couple of hours down the road.
Some of the finest beaches on the east coast are a mere 2+ hour trip...including Myrtle Beach, SC and Virginia Beach, VA. We have one of the largest Broadway-style theatres outside of New York City and regularly host many of the top touring Broadway shows. "The Lion King" is currently playing and "Chicago" just left. Some fantastic east coast ski resorts are a mere 2+ hour drive west. Durham hosts the annual World Beer Festival, American Jazz Festival, Duke Blue Devils, UNC Tarheels & NC State Wolfpack Football & Basketball, Annual American Blues, Reggae and Bluegrass music festivals, Annual Street Performer events, year-long top name outdoor & indoor concerts, one of the top comedy clubs in the country and the annual & huge NC State Fair. Every type and level of restaurant you can imagine. We're 2+ hours from the Anheiser-Busch Brewery and three major amusement parks (Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Carowinds and King's Dominion). We're located in the heart of American revolutionary & civil war historical sites and important Civil Rights Landmarks. We're mere miles from more active and reserve military reservations than any other state in the union...including the largest Army post in the world, Ft. Bragg. We're just a day trip away from the Cherokee Valley Casino strip, Pigeon Forge and Atlantic City, NJ. Who needs Vegas? Hollywood visits our state regularly for features including "Forrest Gump", "Hannibal", "Kiss the Girls", "Godzilla", "Patch Adams", "Cold Mountain", "Ya-Ya Sisterhood", "Bull Durham" and more. Calls are always going out for film extras and bit part actors - union membership not requried. We even have the life-size Thomas the Tank Engine and Sir Tophamhat pulling carloads of excited children through the Carolina mountains. What more can one want?!!! Aside from the corrupt and indifferent politicians, the outrageous state & local taxes and the occasional rowdy university Lacrosse team party, I think it's a grand place to live!

I have always liked the research triangle area of North Carolina, and in fact I almost moved to Chapel Hill a bit ago, but ended up staying put here in cold, cold Michigan... maybe someday. It's definitely near the top of the list of places I wouldn't mind living.

I actually came here looking for Mayberry...truth. My goal after leaving the Air Force was to retire to a small Mayberry-like town as the chief of police, get to know everyone by name and wax philosophically into the ages with my skinny, high-strung officer. Sadly, I never found my Mayberry...but, for a large city complex, Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill is abou as good as it gets.

Skip, you should work for the chamber of commerce.
I live in Durham as well. And if you do psychic readings Leapinglizards, I could have a gig for you in February, '07. can you get here by then...? I'm also happy to answer any questions about the area. Moved here at the age of one in 1972. Other than a forgettable 7 years in Hollywood, I've lived here all my life. Just a great place to live. |
