I was wondering with which kind of things you do magic with.

Of course we can all use the same things as men do. More or less sometimes.

But what kind of things do you use that men just usually don't. I mean like lipsticks, purses...
or what other props do you especially like to use in your shows?

I have performed cigarette sleights using lipsticks....vanishes, color changes, etc. in close-up situations (in pubs, etc.)

I also use an original coin move which no man could do....the "cleavage holdout".

With a little help from the estrogen, anything is possible. Look at what was happening to the fish in the Potomac River.. Smile

Are you familiar with Bill Parcells, the Dallas Cowboys coach? He could probably do it.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Its nice to hear another women using the "Cleavage Holdout" It was suggested to me by my mentor when I was 16 so about 11 years ago, he said that women have to get creative when doing magic and "we gots to uses whats we gots."
All though the words are not terribly pretty I understood what he meant. lol

Long before the Wonderbra I was inspired by girls padding their bras with tissues. When I make a new costume I buy a new bra to go with it (a cup size bigger than needed) and out come the scissors! Result: 2 invisible pockets where the padding of a Wonderbra normally is.

A hint for anyone doing this - sew clips to the inside of the dress and outside of the bra next to the pocket openings so they remain aligned during performance.

That's brilliant! Anyway I usually use lipgloss, soap and teen magazines for tricks because 1) They are everyday objects and 2) If you play them right you can get a few laughs.

Hi Eva your post made me think how cool it would be if someone were to do a tape like Ammar's topit tapes marketed toward women's clothing. So much of our clothes seem to leave so little room to hide anything in. Okay some places I have used for a ditch... boots, thigh hose, and leggings. We should make a list. I wonder what everyone else uses. I remember someone once told me how if you take a wonder bra and take out the pads it will give 2 nice pockets for ditching Smile

Peace Beth

You might want to check out Eleazar Goodenough's "T-Shirt Magic" in The Wizards' Journal #7 (on my site). The T-shirt is pretty much unisex clothing these days and his use of it, although made with the male anatomy in mind (at least skinny males!) may give you ideas for new hiding places you might not have thought of.

Hi,

Some time ago, I expressed interest in finding a realistic looking purse that was a change bag. One of the members here led me to an eBay site which had what I was looking for. It's great as I can walk around with a magic prop in daily life that doesn't look like a prop. Wish they would make more of them as I believe this one was made 20 years ago.

Well...it's not a change bag, but it is a flaming change purse...
Just saw this in the up in flames section.

And it is a prop that I, as a male type person, would have a hard time working into an act.
Thought some of you might want to see it.

Hi Gwyd,

Thanks very much for that link! I like Jim Pace's effects and will add this to my wish list. Again, thanks for taking the time to write the post and inform us.

Card to cleavage/ bra. Works specially when you're wearing a low/ v neck shirt. Also, when in powder rooms, I have the fun of making my classmates' beauty items vanish. It gets funnier when they can't find their sanitary pad/ tampon.

Having extremely long hair, I have used strands when doing close-up in lieu of invisible thread. No reels needed and I am always ready.

I handmake and wear my tribal regalia for my performances. I sew topits in the dress sides, almost like the large topits you find in a tux with long tails, if you know what I mean. You can hide a small moose there.

I have never used the cleavage vanish, but on many occasions I have used a large specially made bra to carry doves safely on a plane. This was before and after September 11. I was even body searched a couple of times, but I guess the birds, being soft and warm, felt natural Smile Once on board, I would place them in a specially prepared carrier. You know, the TSA should hire magicians. We know where to hide things effectively.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

There are times I wear my hair so it covers my ears. Pretty amazing that I can get a couple of quarters in each ear...don't anybody give me the "bigger than an elbow" routine! Smile
