There was a very lively and productive thread on Tricks and Effects about this very subject. It was moved abruptly without explanation to an obscure new forum called Latest and Greatest. Many interesting and creative ideas were being expressed in that thread about this very excellent effect, Ghostvision. Why it was moved to that "graveyard", is not known at present. Hopefully the same kind of discussion will ensue here. It seemed very likely that this effect and the topic was attempted to be suppresed.
You can find the video at Andrew Mayne's website http://www.shockmagic.com. The other thread can be found here. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......8&50 There is also "another" thread about this same topic at the same forum as well. Why the second one had to be moved there is very peculiar. |

I think it was moved as the discussions were not reviews by owners of the product, which is what the Tricks & Effects area is for. Although I agree there were some great thoughts expressed in that thread, they were all just speculations, which is what the new forum, Latest and Greatest, is for.

Andrew Mayne never posted there, as the thread was started by a member of the Café who saw the effect online. The forum is about reviews of marketed effects and or tricks. So many of the threads that have thrived and withered on that forum are still there with same kind of content of this one being mentioned. There is no published rule that says the effect discussed has to be one by an advertising dealer on the Café. Or reviews by owners of the product. Speculations are what most of the threads that exist there now consist mainly of. There is clearly more to this than has been revealed as yet. In the meantime. Performing Ghostvision after doing the Homicide Book Trilogy from Outlaw Effects, would be a very frightening and powerful experience for both the spectators and the performer. The performer may becomed frightened by the incredible reactions of the spectators. This kind of paranormal experience (simulation), has the potential of crossing some serious lines in people's perceptions of what actually happened, and what they fear could not possibly happen. It is something that most are not ready to even think about seeing by themselves. And if they do, will not soon be able to shake the dread, that will stay with them for a long time to come. |

I ordered it and am looking forward to it.
After you check out the demo video for Ghost Vision check out Brian Brushwood's "EVP" (it is at http://www.shwood.com). It is something he uses in his show and is not a marketed effect but it looks like it gets a great reaction. |

John, I totally hear what you're saying, but I think, with the continued growth of this community, that Steve is just trying to streamline things going forward. I for one find it very frustrating having to weed through all the pre-release and pre-review discussions in many of the old review threads when just trying to find the actual reviews of effects I'm considering purchasing.
I also think Ghostvision looks pretty cool and could really freak specs out if used in the right context.

Again thank you for your consideration CasualSoul. You words are very lucid and supportive all the way around. Taking into account what you said, Steve Brooks has a lot of work ahead of him in weeding out the rest of the Tricks and Effects forum. I still feel that the Ghostvision thread was a very good one, and would like to see it revived with the same enthusiasm it was enjoying before being banished to where it is now. There is no activity surrounding it in the Latest and Greatest "limbo".
I spoke with Andrew Mayne last night on PM. He was unaware of what had transpired, and was also perplexed that no explanation was given for such an abrupt move. After all it was a completely well intentioned and respectfully played out thread. Not to mention all the great responses to the effect presented. Purchaes of a currently for sale were being made and posted. That's a valid review in and of itself. (I really like the username CasualSoul. It has a humble and sincere ring to it). Now I did check out the link from above to Brian Brushwood's website. Click on the EVP hyperlink "freaking out". The clip was short, but it was very compelling. I definately want to see more of that! Very cool in the way his preview of that theater audience was presented. That's the kind of response performers usually just dream about! I recommend people taking a look at that link for Brian Brushwood's Bizarre Show, and to look under the heading for "EVP". So now with Andrew Mayne's close up, borrowed cell phone camera effect, Ghostvision. We have a terrific new visually bizarre experience. One that can be combined with other psychic/suggestive effects. To bring about something truly worth discussing on the Magic Café. |

(I still feel that this thread was targeted for reasons other than described here. And several other long time members that I have spoken about it with feel the same). Let's hope that things will change for the better in both places. The Magic Café has recently been undergoing a void in the mentalism, bizarre forums, of creative and truly exciting new ideas and effects. This (along with Outlaw Effects), looked like the spark that could bring about a renewed growth and interest in genuinely exciting presentational experiences to perform again. The Homicide Book Trilogy from Outlaw Effects is a stand alone experience unlike any other todate. But this added dimension to that suggestion, would take things over the edge for many lay people. Not to mention a completely new thrill for the performer ! Inspiration is what people are looking for these days. Especially on The Magic Café. There has been an unfortunate string of very disappointing new releases in magic recently. There's even a large thread of the "Worst Effects of 2006", over there. That has seemd to preoccupy many members time and postings. So why suppress positive and innovative new ideas that are generating such strong enthusiasm from members ? This artist has a long time proven track record of creative and dynamite magical effects and books. This is not a pre-release item (Ghostvision). Many of those (prerelease) items got up to 12 pages long on that forum before being deleted. I am asserting perspective here. Not an over-reaction. Such is the legacy of artistic expression conficting with commercialism. Both need to be maintained in a healthy balance. For one can certainly benefit the other. |

Thanks for the video SamOne..... This is a very good trick.... Only that I have spent so much time in creating and developing magic is that I could figure the trick out the first time I saw it and demonstrated it to a few people and got awsome rections.... It is very simple but very effective....
Thank you Andrew Manyne for another wonderful trick...... Keep building.... |

Being magicians we know what (or should know what), to look for with performances. Especially on a video clip. That isn't too hard to figure out. But to see beyond the method, and carry the vision of the effect to the first time spectator. That's where the value of something like this comes into fruition. If you "believe" in your performance like Richard Osterlind says in his book, you can be convincing time after time with the same spectator. Even if they stumble onto the method after a while.
bond_jmesbond007, you are right on the money, exactly what I'm talking about ! |

This was just posted earlier tonight on the Latest and Greatest forum. It's the first review of this effect on the Café.

The whole idea of someone else's phone or camera is a mindblower..along with the addition of card in hand and extra tricks that can also be performed, made me purchase it..I can't wait till it comes in too give it a spin.

I just ordered it, I'll do a review. Looks promising !
You have to appreciate that Andrew Mayne is as generous with his ideas as he is; with so much overpriced garbage out there, it's great to have a guy who keeps his stuff within reach for my checkbook, and his ego in check.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

I got the trick on Saturday and I've been playing with it. Let's say immediately that the DVD is well produced, as all of the latest Mr. Mayne's standards, and the trick is very well thought out. The principle behind it I think it's clear to everybody on this forum (it is perhaps the only possible way to achieve the effect), but I have to say that the handling by Mr. Mayne is *GREATLY* practical and very, very, good! I wonder why I didn't think of this myself!!! The gimmick is very practical and quite low-cost but it will wear out. This isn't a problem as with a couple of dollars you will be able to get enough material for years of performances.
I really like the effect and it is really spooky: while I don't think the "card on hand" effect is awesome (I think the best effect is the production of the ghost), the idea is versatile: what about taking the photo of your spectator and show him/her with a pentagram on the forehead? or some horns? The "figure" to appear, although not mentioned by Mr. Mayne, doesn't have to be black, but could also be in color - although you will have to study the image carefully to achieve a good result. A very interesting tool - not just a trick - with lot of potential... -- Marco Pusterla - http://www.hauntiques.com/ |

Hmm.. I'm still waiting- but now that I'm waiting and thinking and Marco mentioned a pentagram on the head ... that is a cool way to "select" an audience member
Also...everyone remember the original OMEN film? How photos showed a dark influence heralding death and a bit of the manner (spear, decapitation, etc) - now, if you really hated someone, I suppose you could do an effect like that... hohoho

I received this a few days ago. I agree with everything positive that has been said about this effect and its presentation. Mr. Mayne has done an excellent job and for a very affordable price. This is an effect that gets your brain going; there are many possibilities.
