I just told her what every good magician would tell her. Magicians don't do the same trick twice!

Then everyone gasps, says "Lemme see your shoe!" and the magician unties it, takes it off, and hands it to them to check out. He stands there on one foot waiting to get his shoe back. WTF?! Should it not be more like: you're doing tricks and your shoe is already untied, in between tricks you look down, snap your finger, and everyone sees your shoe lace tie itself, then you delve back into the tricks at hand? Or is that asking too much?

I think, and it's been mentioned, that the STS will have the greatest impact when someone tells you "your shoes are untied."
And it's totally possible, I can imagine doing an ACR with one shoe untied and then all the sudden someone from the crowd tells me...that's when it'll really appear magical. |

You have to ask yourself why, in the middle of your no doubt amazing magic, someone would notice your shoe? And then why, in the middle of your no doubt engaging presentation, would they interupt you to tell you it was untied?
And if you do point it out and they check it, because people love to handle other peoples footwear, then are you going to bend down and tie them up by hand? Paul, p.s. but obviously it's a wonderful trick, an essential tool in every magicians arsenal, question is, why ACR, again? |

I used it as an instance, now that I think of it, it probably wasn't the best situation, but point being, is the trick is best initiated when it's pointed out to you.

I'll start my show then notice that it is untied. I'll usually ask the audience, "How do you tie your shoe? Double loops, double knots" etc. I then proceed to show them just how I do it. It ALWAYS gets a BIG reaction. I've only had one person actually touch my shoe, trying to figure it out. This isn't something you'll do at every table or even every gig but it is a GREAT effect to have to be able to do for that "Special" occasion when you really want to hit them between the eyes (not with the laces of course). I just wished they made one for the left shoe. JIM |

I have both STS and ASL.
While both have pros and cons, STS wins overall in my opinion because of what someone has already mentioned: the shoelaces are obviously tied and clean when you are done, and you can easily go on to something else. I have performed STS over and over and over again in a variety of locations. It is EXTREMELY easy to have with you and ready to set up quickly. I get great reactions because people aren't expecting what happens. When done, you are visibly clean and the laces are tied. There are only two cons to STS: 1.) You must wear pants (you can't wear shorts) 2.) There is a slight noise issue that requires misdirection or background noise to help cover it ASL is more cumbersome in my opinion. You do not end as clean. It isn't as easy to continue on to something else. The beauty of these lace tying illusions is that someone notices your laces while you are doing something else, you magically tie them, and you continue visiting or performing. However, you cannot easily do that with ASL because of how it ends. Like always, it is difficult to fully explain without exposure. You cannot see these performance issues from the demo video because the video ends right after the laces are "tied." I've had PM's with the creator, who offers a solution that he uses: buy an additional gimmick material that wasn't included in the package to help keep the illusion intact after you are done. I haven't been able to find the item that he suggested, so I cannot comment on its workability. He has had good luck, however. Perhaps that additional gimmick should be included with the trick. ASL has a couple of pros: it can be done in shorts, and it is quiet. It is a fantastic concept. PS: I agree with Jim--people *DO* want to see your laces after you perform. With STS, you can raise your foot and lift your pantleg to clearly show the laces tied. Both are good effects, but personally I've found STS more useable. :) . |

For anyone who is still reading this. I had a kind of funny incident where I work, I performed the STS and after the performance my shoes end up missing. It turned up latter that day when a co worker brought back my shoes with the laces taken out and a little frayed. I was ok with this because I am prepared and have replacements at my home. But to think if I had the ASA oh I would be busted.

It's approaching winter here in MN and STS is more seasonal suited until warmer weather comes again..

I own STS and although I don't have the ASA I would agree that it's a natural curiosity for the spectator to request they inspect the shoe. Nothing to do with presentation which in this case is pretty cut-n-dry.
How many Magicians does it take to advertise a trick? Three.. One to steal the trick. One to steal HIS trick. And one to write a good review.

Well...i bought STS and was disappointed Sure I got good reactions with it but with my personality it wasn't worth it ....im the guy that wears shorts when the temperature is in the negatives lol so I had to GO OUT OF MY WAY TO perform the trick...not to mention the fact that I didn't really like the GIMMICK lol but I don't have ASL so I would say its all up to what YOU want to do because in the end that's all that matters
on a separate note....i was NEVER asked to take my shoe off not even one time I just hiked up my pant leg a bit and rotated my foot a bit and they where happy and trust me I have some of the hardest crowds lol I once did the Cups and balls for a small group in my class (i hate highschool) I did the kinda cheap version that you learn starting out and I did it good and all but my teacher was like "hmm..." and she grabbed the cups away from me and was like HAHA I got it luckily for me I had stolen the extra b4 she grabbed it so they were all like "wow amazing" lol its funny though because one guy took it and said I can do that and he failed several times (due to he had 3 balls) then the guy next to him said and I quote "you idiot didn't you noticed he tapped the cups every time b4 he stacked them" and yet....that still didn't work for them lol I love people like that oh well ill stop babbling CD oops I mean DC

No offense, but this is a Shoe Lace thread, not a cups and balls thread. IMO. if you actually go out and buy the ASL, you will see the difference in the quality. The ASL only mealy LOOKS like it is tied where as in the STS it is REALLY tied and can be fully examined afterwords. If you try letting your teacher examine your shoe after doing the ASL, you'll be busted and embarrassed. Mark my words. |

Yes but if you do the STS in shorts you will be busted.....AND I ONLY WEAR SHORTS so for me ASL SEEMS like it would be better
and no offense but like I said "ill stop my babbling" I appologized sometimes I do that (go off topic and start meaningless conversation)..... DC

I agree with redsixer, owning both effects I would say definitely go with STS. Keep in mind the majority of effects encompass some degree of limitations, but in my opinion with such an up-close effect, it's best to end clean with STS at the small sacrifice of wearing pants.

Yeah, but isn't like weird to wear long pants in summer ? (like the guy in the "Do you want to learn Magic ?" DVD... he is wearing a long sleeve jacket in SUMMER in South Beach Miami Florida... when you know it's magician you HAVE TO know there is something "up his sleeves" (pun intended here)
Point is ... even though I LOVE STS (it's really great, don't ge me wrong here), I think that owning both would be the greatest (ASL for summer and STS for colder periods)...and I don't have ASL (the only thing I m wondering, can you walk after this ?) |
