Just curious as to how many people here have developped a persona for their performance. How important do you guys think acting is your performance? Or is skill really what's most important. It seems silly to me at this point to take on a angel/blaine mystery man like approach since not only have they claimed the title, but in my opinion made it really cheesy.

I agree raphlo that the the mystery man persona doesn't stand much chance any longer, lol;)
well in my oppinion the acting is the most important part of my performance. it depends on everyone's personality and especially on the character they play (if they have one).i have spent a lot of time putting thought into my character and I am still nowhere near completion with this. so to answer your first question - my persona is in a BETA version still but so far it was a hit so to say. all the best -Matt

If you want a great example of a persona, check out http://www.whithaydn.com
Whit developed his "Pop Haydn" 1800's persona a few years ago and it's working great! I've seen videos of him in and out of this character, and I like the new "Old Style" persona much better. He becomes more than a guy doing some magic tricks, now you see a "show," magic tricks or not. Most people, unless they're skilled actors, can't pull off something like this. I suspect Whit's really "Pop" in disguise and he's just now letting his true personality show through. Same thing pretty much for Max Maven/Phil Goldstein. Over the years Max has taken over the body of Phil so completely that there's no acting necessary anymore. Phil IS Max Maven.

One personnae I'm developing is a good humored guy from the inner city.
He grew up in backrooms of pool halls, street corners and through his grandfather got to meet a variety of shady people from gamblers to scammers to worse. His grandmother introduced him to fortune tellers, Wiccans and the like. There is actually some truth to this so the character and is not too much of a stretch. Around friends and family they know me so while I can get into character a little with some of them but I'm usually my witty and wonderful self with others. Acting to some degree is essential in order to decieve. While important, and in most cases, skill is not supposed to be seen by laypersons so presentation and acting is more important from that viewpoint. If you're portraying a gambler type then you may want them to feel they are watching a skilled character. Unless you can act, the personnae should come from within you and from your experiences.
