I have been using a paddle trick for maybe 20-plus years and it is one of the strongest close up routines I have. And I am not going to tell what it is.

Recently, ever since I picked up the Complete Workers Ebook, I've been having fun with Michael Close's "Down for the Count"....

I still have an old Tenyo Wonder Signal that I'm very fond of. Other than that... Money Paddle and Color Changing Knives.

Yes.... but I have totally changed it in the 20-plus years of doing it and wearing out dozens of them. My best one, carved for me by Les Smith and "hallmarked" was grabbed out of my hands and never given back.

In my hand I have this bat, I'll show it to you just like that.
On one side three lines I'll scratch. On the other three to match. . . Never heard of it. I'm currently using one that is a white board with a dry erase marker. I prefer the original. I need to go shoping and locate some "blackboard paint" to refurbish my originals. Bill |

I just found some "textured" flat black that is working fine. I ran out of "Chalkboard" paint and have not found a source (altho I haven't looked very hard). What's harder to find is soft chalk.

I have experienced the same with the chalk. All this "new" stuff is anti dust coated and works against me. This is why I opted for the white board dry marker combination.

I checked Michaels Arts and Crafts, no blackboard paint, but then found an AC Moore and they have it in spray and brush form. If you can't find an AC Moore out there Pete, let me know and I'll send you some from the East coast if you like.

I have always been interested in magic and I had even performed neighborhood magic shows with the little plastic tricks from a magic set my Dad got me when I was about 8. I watched every Doug Henning and David Copperfield show that hit the airwaves. BUT...what actually moved me from entertained to entertainer was the Hot Rod! Yep. About 15 years ago a co-worker who did magic part-time always had a card trick or something to show me. One night at work, he brought a Hot Rod. I fell hook, line and sinker for the force and when he handed it to me for inspection, I was amazed. I decided I just had to amaze others like I was amazed. Not too long after that, I got me a Hot Rod. Unlike many who buy magic tricks and are disappointed at the simplicity of them, I thought it was brilliant. To this day, I ALWAYS have a paddle trick of some kind on me and perform them probably more often than anything else. And it doesn't matter what type of mentalism I can do, or what I can levitate, vanish or produce...it seems to me that the paddle tricks always get the best reactions and the most buggin'-out eyeballs!
I have several versions of the classic Hot Rod...wood, plastic, aluminum, brass, chrome, color-changing, large ones, small ones, ones with gems, ones with spots...I've got it covered. I also really like the No. 2 Pencil. That always floors 'em! It gets people talking about you anytime you can do something that seemingly impossible with such a recognized, common item. I use the Deluxe Money Paddle as a means of leaving tips. Show the server the paddle with coins on each side, (usually a quarter, a nickel and a penny...on each side...totalling 62 cents!), telling them to pay attention because it's directly related to their tip. As if that isn't bad enough...I start REMOVING coins! Then, the pay-off. I produce a bill on one side of the paddle, (and prior to setup, I write their name on it for an even greater effect), and explain that all magic is, of course, done with mirrors! I LOVE doing that one and it often gets me a free dessert or something. The Hot Rod Pen is a great item, too. It's a pen, so it's a common, recognized object. It writes and the spots are painted on; so there will be no finding of any gimmick by the spectator. Awesome reactions with that one. |

Sometime ago Ronjo manufactured a foot long Hot Rod out of clear plexiglass...it didn't fit in many pockets though!

My personal favorite is The Pygmy Paddle. I found the routine in the Magic Menu and in a set of notes called Nothing Up My (Green)Sleeves. I also think it will be featured in the upcoming Live At the Jailhouse DVD set. I have seen it performed in many strolling situations as well as at some trade shows. Talk about a pretty good trick!
It is from some obscure performer named Paul Green. Enjoy the search, Paul (hmmmmm, where have I heard that name before) Green |

Carney's routine from "Carneycopia" for me, hands down. It's an impromptu stunner, that guy's thinking is unreal.

The Amazing Jumping Arrow, however I do not use it that much. the best thing to use is a lighter with a logo on one side.
