When I log on, all the subjects and all messages are red. If I just come to the site without logging in, the messages are normal (new posts have red cups) but once I log in, everything is red and it doesn't go away.
Whats UP? |

Hi Bill,
I quoted the following from my answer to this question in the Tech help forum: Quote:
The red cups aren't a bug, it's just what happens when you change servers like this. Even though it looks pretty much the same, the whole Cafe is on a different server, and your browser is treating the pages as if you've never seen them before. Gene and I tried to figure out how to compensate for this, but it's not in our control, it's a function of your browser. Hope this helps! Mary B. |

Still having problems. My cookie does not seem to be updating the site. Before I log in, everything looks right (a few cups red, there are new posts there... everything is fine). As soon as I log in, All cups turn red, and it doesn't seem to update. In other words, if I go away and relog in again, All cups are still red, indicating that it is not recognizing that I've been here. This is getting frustrating. It would be great if there was one "update everything" button rather than having to go into each forum and update.

Hi Bill,
I'll need a little more information to help me troubleshoot the problem. When you first logged in to the new board, did you go through each forum and "Mark all as read"? I know it's a pain, but it needs to be done. Did you click the checkbox to "Keep me logged in" when you logged in? Checking that box will set a persistent cookie on your machine that will log you in automatically whenever you come to the Cafe. If you're concerned, there is nothing useful that a potential hacker would find in that cookie. The password in the cookie is hashed, and indecipherable. Please go into one of the forums and mark all the topics as read. Tell me which forum, and I can check the database to make sure the correct entries are being made. I'll be online all evening, and checking this thread for your reply. I know it's frustrating, but we'll figure it out. Mary B. |

Ok Mary,
I seem to be having a similar problem. I did click the box to keep me logged in, but what happens is I read a post or what not leave and come back tommorow and all the red cups from yesterday are there along with new ones. Yet when not logged in it all seems to work fine.

So, here is the difference between the way it used to be and now. In the past there were some forums I checked and some I didn't. Even so, if I checked the forum and didn't read any of the messages, the site still acknowledged that I had the opportunity to read the message and marked it "read" with a white cup.
Now it doesn't, unless I actually read the message. The problem with this is the following: Let's say I check "Glass Eating" occasionally. I go to the forum but none of the topics interest me. I leave. When I come back, it is marked with a red cup. I go there and the same topics are there. It hasn't been updated so I have to keep going back there even though no new messages may have been posted since my last visit. I know I could check "mark all as read" but it is annoying to have to constantly do that. Now when I come to the forum, almost every forum is marked with a red cup, since I only follow a few forums. While before it was much cleaner. |

I understand your frustration, but the board is working the way it was meant to work. The way it worked before used an inaccurate method of tracking which topics you had viewed and which ones you hadn't. The bright red mugs signify that there are topics in that forum containing posts which you have not viewed.
On the old board, it worked just as you described - the cup would change to white whether you had seen all the new posts in that forum or not. On this board, they work the way they were intended - the cup won't turn white until you either actually open each topic for viewing, or click the link to mark them all as read. I realize that this is not much help if you don't want to click the "mark all" link. There is another way to check for new posts. When you look at the index page, at the far right there is a column labeled "Last Active". It gives the date, time and author of the most recent post in that forum. There is a "GO" link that will take you directly to that listed post. If you instead open the forum by clicking on its name in the left column, you will see the "Last Active" column on the topic listings page as well. Any recently active topics will be near the top of the list. You can look at the dates and/or timestamp in the Last Active column to see what's been posted since your last visit. From what you and Prophet describe, it sounds as though the red cups are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing - keeping an accurate account and showing you which forums have unread topics in them. I think the problem is that you both got quite used to them working incorrectly on the old board. I'm sorry, I know this doesn't solve your problem, but there really isn't any more I can do. This evening, Gene is going to put a link at the top of the topics list to "mark all as read". At least it will be in a more convenient location. The link at the bottom of the list will remain as well. Mary B. |

Thanks for the help Mary. Reminds me of my old software development days: is it a bug or a feature?

It looks like you didn't click the box to attach your signature to all your messages. I "clicked" it in the database for you. If you ever want to change whether it shows or not, go into "Edit Preferences" and change your selection there.
