What card effects fit these conditions?
Impromptu, Borrowed Deck, In the Hands, No Culling I have Vernon's "Out of Sight, Out of Mind", and the Biddle Trick. What others? |

Here's a few. The condition of the deck plays an important part in choices.
A standing Triumph that use moves from David Acer & J.C. Wagner. "Riffled Thought" - Dai Vernon. "Ambitious Card" jazzing here. "Homing Card" - Francis Carlysle. An effect where the spectator unknowingly chooses the 4 Aces. "Be Honest, What is It?" – Eddie Fechter. "Too Many Cards" – Derek Dingle. "Twisting the Aces" – Dai Vernon. "Sanverted"- John Carney. "Apex Aces" - Frank Garcia. If you can use the spectators hands then there's more. Why no culling??? |

No culling because I'm specifically looking for effects that have no stacking. I want to take the borrowed deck and just launch into it. I know there are fine ways to cover a cull - just what I'm looking for in this case.
Thanks for your list! |

How about in the spectator's hands? Things like 4,5,6 packet trick or devastation come to mind. You can do untouched by Daryl. Bill Goldman's version of the 21 card trick is another good one. Mike Powers also has a terrific version. A lot of John Bannon's card tricks come to mind especially from his Dear Mister Fantasy.

Yes, spectators hands can be used (in place of table).

I will second "Devastation". The trick floors, is completly impromptu and the spectator handles the cards for the majority of the trick. Brilliant and simple, the way the best magic is.

They are visual and easy and you never ever see people or peoples uncles doing them so they come off as very original. Simon Lovell has a trick called "Imagine" (dont know if its his but its off one of his dvd's) which I find is pretty good as it has a little personal story, and the climax is a finding their card via color change and than changing it back. To make the story short, they chose a card, it goes back in the deck, shuffled, you show the bottom card and confirm its not their card, and you tell them to "imagine" their card and with a wave of the hand the bottom card changes to their card, than with another wave it changes back, and you tell them about how its all about imagination etc. The 2 card monte is a whopper to if you ask me. They just don't see it coming.

What is the effect of "Devastation" from Geoff William's Miracles For Mortals?

Yes, Simon Lovell has a bunch of such effects - in Simon Says.
Also, John Bannon in Dear Mr. Fantasy, which entirely deals with borrowed deck routines. I particularly like Last Man Standing. Final Verdict is a nice Spectator Cuts to the Aces routine. kerpa a/k/a Michael Miller Chicago area

Daryl's "Untouched" is certainly an excellent effect. Admittedly, this one doesn't meet the "no table" criteria, but I really enjoy J.C. Wagner's "JC's Fabulous Four-Ace Routine" from his book "The Commercial Magic of J.C. Wagner." This can also be found on his Commercial Magic DVD's (Volume 2, entitled "More Commercial Magic"). I personally think this is the best version of the Henry Christ Four-Ace Trick out there. Back to tricks that meet all the criteria... Aldo Colombini's "Elevon" is another fun effect that is relatively simple in its execution and the climax is beautiful. A card just seems to melt from the center to the top of the deck--very nice. I like Shakti's color change idea as well. One can do so much with a simple color change and yet it is so eye-popping when you don't expect it (or even when you DO expect it for that matter). Gemini Twins from Karl Fulves' More Self-Working Card Tricks is a great effect that, given the proper presentation, can really be unbelievable. One last thought, I saw Barrie Richardson at the 74th Columbus Magifest in February, 2005 and he stated in his lecture that one thing he uses that really seems to astound laypeople is a simple force in which a spectator keeps the card hidden against their chest and he (Barrie) proceeds to slowly and methodically pluck from their mind the color, followed by the suit, followed by the value. He then has the spectator dramatically turn the card around and hold it high for all to see. Every time he did it, he used at least two spectators, sometimes three. His point was that this ALWAYS plays stronger for him than a card-to-impossible-location effect. Indeed, in the lecture this effect received gasps from some of the magicians' wives who were in attendance. His proposed reason was that reading a person's mind is much more personal than causing a card to supposedly teleport to an impossible place. In addition, the spectator holding the card to their chest helped to keep them involved (the emotional "hook" as Vernon called it), heightened suspense for the rest of the audience, and it opens many presentational possibilities (beat of their heart, etc). Simple but EXTREMELY effective. Try it (and really put yourself into it... really sell it) and you'll see how effective it is.

Card in pocket, card in wallet, card under cardbox, card in fly, card to forehead, etc. triumph, cheek to cheek...
You also don't need to use a whole deck, just openly take out, say the four aces and do a twisting the aces effect or any other little packet type trick. The possibilities are endless. I'd say at least 3/4 of my card work is done without prior setup.

One I like is Wayne Houchin's Stigmata. Borrowed deck, simple handling. It's all in the presentation.
