What year?
Seriously, you can't go by weight. Until the Busby Stainless Steel cups, all Paul Fox cups were made of either copper or brass. Some were chrome plated, some were nickel plated, some were silver plated and others were unplated. There may be some genuine sterling silver sets out there somewhere, but I doubt it. The people who used to spin the cups for Danny told me that they never spun any silver for him because of certain things they would have had to do. The weights range from 2.6 oz. for early cups to around 6.5 ounces for Busby PF cups. Late DD cups were around 4 oz., maybe a bit more. Just about the time you figure that you have all of the characteristics wired, somebody shows you a verifiable set that has a different characteristic. But somehow you can feel which ones are right. This may sound silly, but it's like handling Brema brasses. A friend of mine told me that genuine Brema brasses have a certain feel and heft to them. They just "feel right." You handle these things all day long, and you get to where they are like old friends.

Cup weights vary sometimes, it's like dye lots with thread and material. Some stock that comes in can either be .02 over or .02 under, sometimes more than that or sometimes less. I have collected over 19 sets of Paul Fox cups over the years, for the one purpose of actually making a near perfect matching set in shape. Weight factors are can be accounted for the person spinning, the cut off and polishing out imperfections. The rule of thumb of cups only being off by 1/10th of an ounce from cup to cup is a stringent rule to hold for older cups as the weight really wasn't something they factored in, but rather the actual shape of the cup.
We recently acquired 5 sets of Fox copper sets from an estate in New Orleans. I had to sit down and match them, I'm not sure if they were just mixed up over the years but the cups were not well matched, but are now Bill, I'm on my way to the plater, thanks for the PM, I'll message back when I get back tonight, I have 90 min. to make it to Norfolk Cheers Jake

One thing to watch out for is the new Penguin cups. They have improved the old cups. The saddle doesn't have the "peck marks" in them that plagued the first runs of cups. Also, they are almost exactly the same height as the PF/DD cups. They are a tad heavier than the PF/DD cups. If you get a set of copper PF/DD cups and they weigh about 4.3oz., they may be Penguins.

Bill and I spoke about this the other day. I had a client send me a set he recently purchased who has a real set of PF/DD cups. He wanted me to verify a set he was sending. They were so close to the PF/DD I told him I believed they were but didn't know who spun them, he recanted "I do, Magic Makers". This of course prompted me to speak with Bill as this is very disturbing because now we have no idea of whats on the market, I'm telling you these are very close for passing.
One giveaway could be how the insides are polished and the tooling marks. Cups are like bullets in a way, they have traces of inner tooling marks, kind of a cups ballistic test. I believe we have 2 sets of stainless and 1 set of Nickle left at RNT II. Earlier today we have made the decision to cease all production of the PF cup we make, we are not going to become part of the confusion if any occurs and quite frankly we all feel the ones that have bought the cups are the serious workers and collectors and it's time to retire the line for good. Also remaining are 4 sets of Copper Chick cups and 2 sets of brass. These have also come to the end of their life on the line. RNT II Magic, Inc. will also stop using the PF logo after the last of these sets are sold. It was a nice run, but nothing lasts forever. Too many other things to do. Jake

Agreed, Jake... I think the market has been saturated and all the collectors have collected.
