Well, I'm finally posting a message! I look forward to spending more time in here consulting, sharing, preserving and creating...
I am on the West Coast of the United States and work all over primarily as a Hospitality type Entertainer at VIP parties. I can say that I wish I knew more like all you heavy readers!! I do love to create hands on and don't like to spend to much time dreaming about it... Go to just do it! Hope you enjoy some of my simply caught moments on my site... Hope that one day Ill actually get footage of a real performance... as what I do in a hospitality environment as far as personal skills is far more powerful than my magic. I am lucky enough to be the host of a new DVD series distributed by WEA (Warner) that will hits stores worldwide about now. If anyone has questions or concerns about that too, please drop a line. I have written quite a few articles pertaining to poker and table image over the last couple years and look forward to improving my subtle game of texas holdem... Hey, Im off to a game tonight! Cheers and Ill try to visit much more often! r

Oh, Hi jeff... I checked out your site Really glad you have the updated ones! There is a Four Box Set coming in late November for a killer deal:) Since these were designed for the mainstream market, the price will reflect that a bit.
Thanks for the time to say hi! I am really looking forward to this site. I have always stayed FAR from chatting.... but, this site is amazing... And I know of many insanely skilled folks who drink the coffee here! cheers, r

Hello Rich!
Nice to see you here. I own your 4 dvd set with the cuts, shuffles, flourishs and chip tricks etc. I like it alot. I've picked up quite a few little moves from them. Of course there are still a few that I can't seem to "get" for the life of me. But isn't that always the way? Anyway, nice to see you here. I have never reviewed your DVD's, but if a new thread starts up with reviews, I'll certainly add my voice to it. I have some questions about how you put the set together and the crediting issues. (But don't worry, I'm not the "ethics police". I just had some questions about the thought process that went into the making of the DVD's because I think it may have been intresting.) Maybe I'll get a chance to ask about it someday. Welcome aboard, Vandy

Oh hi Rich! A very warm welcome to you. So glad you jumped in and joined this happy group. We are a fun bunch and all are very friendly. Well, mostly friendly. (and one or two are mostly dead) The ones that aren't friendly, Steve is quick to refuse service as is his prerogative as the Café owner. I'm looking forward to checking out your website and chatting with you here at the best magic Café on this planet. There are quite a few of us here that live on the west coast too. Maybe our paths will cross out here. Maybe an informal get together for a bunch of us at the Castle some night? Best to you Rich and WELCOME. |

Vandy,
HI there! what is the best way to start a thread for us to discuss? I am all for a PM to you, but I know that discussing an open conversation is nice if possible so others can put in their thoughts... I can talk a bit about the business side and our reasons for creating a DVD that gets right to the point... In short, beleive it or not, many effects enter into "common knowledge" and we are creating a long history of credits on our main site as a main part of the about the DVDs section. To fit 190 plus techniques, tips, tricks or whatever you want to call that silliness I teach, time was of importance for being able to afford higher quality end results... meaning little compresion of our clean footage... also to fit onto single layer worldwide playing DVDs that will keep the price for the end consumer lower... as these are made for the mainstream market... and just happen to be great tools for magician too! So, I know the snapchange, flippant,... hmmm, I know there is another couple... did get a mention during the teaching in the dvd... another random couple effects got a credit in the credits... All tricks that have any history will have a credit on the website and it will take some time as this is one of my goals - to get some help from people on a forum like this to give the real history to a "t" of everything... Not just a mention of who is most popular for a trick... all variations, history, etc... A mainstream dvd is not the place for that in our opinion, expecially for common knowledge effects that I used to build more advanced tricks. Unfortunately, as a self taught entertainer, I never read much and have created endless tricks that I have been told in a similar way originated from somewhere... I would never steal or claim rights to anything... and we did consult with a couple of the best read and highly known magicians around to make sure we did not cross any lines. I agree, that in general, the teaching, extra talking, etc... is different than in most magic DVDs... It just so happens that these are not magic dvds. These are to teach everyday people how to handle chips and cards... just there are many, many tricks of all levels too. ... but no magic and no cheating... weird, aint it!? I love it. I have put in most of my very favorite "moves" too that do not cross into top changes, double lifts, etc. I would love to get a thread going about breaking down the tricks... I could put the full list of every trick and maybe people would be kind enough to give their opinion of any history they know to them... there are, of course, many unorthidoxed effects I created over the years that might have a history too! I do not know much about forums and the best and fairest way to do this... Can you suggest anything!? Until later, cheers and continued success! r Quote: On 2006-10-08 06:51, Vandy Grift wrote:

Rich,
Thanks for the reply. The best way to address this is probably wait until the reviews are done and then wait for the inevitable comments about crediting. Then address it there. You kind of answered my questions already. I was intrigued by the fact that most of the card moves (and even some of the chip stuff) that I was familiar with (and I was familiar with quite alot) were introduced with names that are not the ones I know from the magic side of things. This didn't bother me, I actually appreciated it, because the target audience is not really magicians. I was a little torn, because credit is such a big deal in magic, but I understood that this was not the purpose of the DVD's. I actually wondered if you had used different names and stayed away from mentioning magicians in an attempt to keep laymen from scrambling toward the magic books. That's magicians thinking I'll admit, the fact is that most people wouldn't do that. I think it's cool that you are looking towards crediting the material on your website. It's just going to mean less headaches for you in the long run. And much of it should be credited. But I understand why you made the DVD's the way you did, and I think they turned out great. Like I said, I don't lose sleep nights overr this issue. But a lot of people here do, so just kind of a warning I suppose. LOL. Again, I really enjoy the DVD's and am using a few of the things everyday, they are the best DVD's sets of thier kind.
