When posting a pic to a website forum such as this one, how does one "shrink" one's photos down to a manageable size? One of the message forums I belong to allows you to post pics in your messages, but the pics can be no larger than 100k in size. Some of the pics from my digital camera that are stored on my computer are 870k or higher! Some are over 1 MB in size! How do I get those larger pics to shrink down to a suitable size (i.e. 100k or less) for posting online?

There's a free program called IRFANVIEW that will do batch conversion and batch scaling.
It's quite good!

The are also several photo hosting sites which give you a "thumbnail hotlink"...which can be posted at most Message Board sites. Clicking onto the thumbnail you post, will automatically re-direct to the original size photo.

I downloaded that IRFANVIEW program. However, it is too complicated to figure out!!
Why can't there just be a button or command prompt in one of these photo edit programs that says "Resize selected photo(s) to _______ KB?" That would be so much easier! Thanks for all the suggestions, though. They are just too complicated for me for me to figure out. |

If you upload your image to:
http://imageshack.us/ There is an option to resize it in the process of uploading it. While I wouldnt recommend this for you, as you found IRFANVIEW complicated, I would recommend to others: http://www.gimp.org/ The Gimp is a fantastic open-source solution for photo-editing that has many capabilities on par with Photoshop and legally free.... very good for many things, editing, color fixing and of course simple crops and resizes. |
