I use Greg Wilson's 3/4 across as well. Except I use a fanning pitch to get the second coin across. This idea came from Platt's Catapualt DVD, so all the credit goes to him. I think it truly strengthens this routine by a lot.

I always use the same one, Boomerang Coins from 21st Century Coin Mechanics. Four coins, no extras, no gaffs, great angles. But get ready to practice.

I like that move as well, but never thought about trying it in the 3/4 across routine. Cool idea, I'll have to try it.

In the book MONEDAS, MONEDAS and MONEDAS (in spanish) of Juan Tamariz has an excellent COIN ACROSS with only 4 coins, without preparation, not gimmick and totaly impromptu.

My favorite coins across (and I have many) is Tallahassee Jumping Coins. Three coins, standup, last one going into the hands of a spectator. It is in the Penguin Live lecture as well as the NYCMS dvd series. It can be done with three of the same coin, or three different coins. Both presentations and variations are taught in both places.

Coins Across is a great trick because there are so many, and it allows you to sew moves together from here & there to create your own, which typically becomes your favorite.

My favorite is my own, something I call, "Kemosabe." It's done with 4 regular half dollars with a few nice twists & turns to it. Gotta make it available one day soon, it's pretty good and one of the BIG 3 coin tricks I do nowadays.

I also, long ago now, came up with a 3-coin variety, called "Krazy KoinZ Across," one of five nice effects in my "Short Pockets" download.

MB has some real world workers in his routines......very doable and no angle problems

I remember really getting into Coins Across behind Michael Ammar's, "Intro To Coin Magic" DVD. It was an awfully long time back now, but I'm glad his Easy Coins Across(?) version inspired me so greatly. Not only that, but I think sometimes Coins Across is perhaps the best coin effect of all, as you learn to use so much from it. And the great variety of it relates to our growth from it and creativity with it.

Whenever I got some good time to play around with folks (as I did today a few times), I like to do my version of it. Always amazing to them, always fun!

I like wing silver its not gimmicked but it does require the one ahead principle.

Al Schnieder's Coins Across fooled me badly when I first saw it.

The first "Coins Across" effect I recall as a kid had no name and I have never seen published.

At a dinner party this old guy opened an old "Rose" purse and dumped six coins on the table -- each different: think a penny, dime, nickel, quarter, half dollar and bus token.

He covered this pile with his left hand and placed his empty right palm down on the table far away. When lifted one coin had moved over.

His hands never came close to each other, but the process was repeated until all the other coins had been transported one by one.

No gaffs possible! No false transfers. Yes, he used a different magic word or finger wiggle for each transportation, but that was for humor.

It took me years to realize how he had accomplished this -- and felt foolish ;-)

the point is that sometimes we overcomplicate things as magicians trying to impress magicians. Does the audience really care that one method is better than another?

What is the setting? Who is the audience? Are they focused or detracted? What effect came before and what will follow?

If I assume the question of "no gaff" means an impromptu setting, then performing with half dollars or silver dollars are out. If you perform with coins unfamiliar to the audience it will not matter if they are gimmicked or not.

If "no-gimmick" means being able to have them casually handled by a spectator many "Switch-In" techniques are available.

So, the original question here was "what more could a guy need?"

Most replies have been to offer alternative effects in a helpful view of "what else?"

Started learning it on Saturday, performing it tomorrow. The sleight is reasonable after a bit of effort and lots of short periods of practice.

If I had $100 spare I might have gone for gaffs, but as a restaurant magician I seriously doubt I'll buy anymore (already have triple-fold 50p and a coin unique. The latter is used in every set.)

Themagiciansapprentice - you're performing an effect less than a week after learning it? Without previous experience of that sleight? Why not wait till a future gig - wait until your pinch is completely undetectable.

funsway - there are other reasons why one may want an ungimmicked version. If it precedes or follows another effect where no gaffs are used, it may be cluttered to use a gaff. Take for instance doing a 3 coins across followed by a coins through silk. I haven't thought about how to link these yet, I'm just pointing out that being "pure" isn't the only reason for avoiding gaffs. Darwin Ortiz links together card routines for his shows and it would be awkward to continuously switch in and out gaffs and it can apply the same for coin magic.

For me, ungimmicked, it is often 3/4 across, as it may be that teens ask me what I can do with their coins (note, this isn't necessarily a challenge - they want magic to be done to their stuff. I've had kids tell me they kept that coin of theirs to remind them of the magic). I sometimes borrow a coin, multiply it to 3, do the coins across, then vanish them one by one back to their original (using various ditches). I also have a 4 coins across made of standard moves (like Michael Ammar's DVD) ending in their hand, which I continuously refine with subtleties so that it is nearly as strong as Roth's shelled routine.

My version of the trick feels like Roth's Shelled Coins Across whenever I do it, though it is gaffless and has a few different twists and turns to it. Long way from Ammar's Simple Coins Across, but the roots are there.

Again gregory wilson gets no credit it is Jay Sanky's MR clean's effect gregory used quaters instead of half dollars

I'm another fan of Mr Clean Coins Across it's been one of my go to routines for many years when put on the spot, another go to routine I use is the classic Flying Eagles as taught on the Ammar tapes many moons ago.
