Just curious for those that use this, what presentation do you use? I don't like the cliche version of 'If I put one in my pocket, how many does that leave'?
Thanks in advance guys. |

I tell a story about the first magic trick I learned... making a coin disappear. What follows is not my patter verbatim, but a basic outline of the routine. (Trust me... my presentation is better than it sounds when reading the "script" I've typed here.):
I start with the two coins in my hand... a half dollar and my "lucky penny". (I do a little bit about how I was always misplacing my lucky pennies because they were so small, which wasn't very lucky at all, so I got a big penny from England instead.) I tell them I will make one of the coins disappear. Then I take the half dollar and openly place it in my pants pocket. TA DAAA! Ha ha... just kidding. Here, let me show it to you again done the right way (show both coins back in hand). In order to make the half dollar disappear, I won't need my lucky penny (put penny in other pants pocket). Now I snap my fingers and the half has disappeared (show both coins back in hand). Hmmm... it didn't work!?!?!?! I remember now... I did it backwards. I'm supposed to make the penny disappear. Here, I won't need this silver coin. Would you be so kind as to drop it in my shirt pocket? Thanks. (this gives the spectator an opportunity to handle the ungaffed half, thus giving the impression that everything is examinable). Now I snap my fingers and the penny has disappeared (show both coins back in hand). Still didn't work!!! At this point, I feign frustration. !@^&%#@%!%@!#%$ (no cussing). Well, this isn't working. I better put my lucky penny away before I lose it (put penny in pocket). You know I never did get the hang of making a coin disappear. (I make a hands open shrugging gesture which reveals that the other coin did, in fact, disappear.) Depending on the situation, I'll retrieve the half dollar from my shirt pocket and my lucky penny (ungaffed one pre-positioned in my pocket) to either do another routine or just act like I'm putting them away in the coin holder I have. I set them non-chalantly down on the table where the spectator can handle them (and they usually do) while I retrieve the coin holder to put them away.

I wrote of poem I recite while performing the Hopping Half (I do a wizard-type show for children). I originally posted this in the "Once upon a time..." forum, but am glad to reproduce it here with some very minor changes. Note: the Wizard Gall is an English penny and the Wizard Kay is the half-dollar (just to avoid confusion).
Wizard's Duel The Wizard Gall and Wizard Kay (show coins individually) Had met for dueling one fine day. Now, Gall struck first, his wand did wave And sent the other far away. (place half in pocket) But Kay appeared to great surprise, (show half returned) For he was strong and very wise. So Kay stood tall and without fear Made Wizard Gall just disappear. (place penny in pocket) A growing sound, then thunder clap, And in a moment Gall was back. (show penny returned) He cast a spell hard as he could; Now just some smoke where Kay had stood. (place half in pocket) “So I have won!” Gall said with glee. “No. You are not yet done with me.” (show half returned) Then Kay invoked an ancient light ‘til Gall was taken from our sight. (place penny in pocket) Then silence fell upon the field Where two great wizards would not yield. So powerful the magic used, The Wizard Kay had vanished too! (show hand empty) Regards, Steve

I use 2 presentations for this effect, depending on the audience.
The first is about the test of becoming a magician. I told them I went to a magic shop one day and the owner asked if I had passed the test to become a magician. He then said magic uses only 2 coins, an english penny and an american half dollar. If I were to take the half dollar and place it in my pocket what's left? (Ask the audience.) No both coins, as you can see it was a harder test than I imagined, so he sent me to Sylvestor The Jester (or other big name they may know) and he tested me and I passed. I do this up until the last phase and I say when Copperfield took the english penny and asked me what was left. I said "I have had this test 4 times now, BOTH coins" and that's when he said, "and that's why you need some more practice." 2nd story Sobriety Test with a cop, lawyer, Bailif, and Judge! I like the poem idea yachanin |

The best presentation I've heard for Hopping Halves comes from Steve Bacho. His presentation is found on the "Collected Wisdom of Magic Talk" website. Click here:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~roy/magictalk-wi......alf.html The Great Smartini has further work on this particular presentation. It is found here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=3 Personally, I've always been meaning to flesh out this presentation but sometimes life gets in the way...
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

Whilst I don't perform the original hopping halves I have performed a version of the effect called short hop which is much better from a reset point of view from the dvd miracles while you wait by mark jennest.
The presentation used is that the performer is trying to recall an effect they saw a magician perform,to give some idea it's along the line of: This magician put a silver coin in his pocket. (pause) Oh that's not right. Can I start over? (Revealing the coin has returned etc.) |

(Hopping Half Sun and Moon routine)
I never understand how Salesmen use their skills to maximise revenue. 1> Get to the final stages of a deal negotiation, you think it's closed, and they demand discount, (copper gone), yet the revenue remains the same. 2> Start negotiating payment purchases, and they screw you down even tighter, (half goes). 3> Show both still there - the deal is still holding it's value. 4> Show them the half, and "split" while doing that. Take half dollar and pocket, (grabbing a large Chinese coin). Show the two coins - deal still keeps value. 5> Bring the two coins together, and take "one" out - while swapping in the Chinese coin. At the end of the day, may need to use ForEx exchanges to keep the value, but at the end of the day they still keep their bonuses high. Hope that's useful to someone. Bruce |

I think the Steve Bacho presentation is great! Well thought out and has you hooked into wondering what will become of the two coins!
My two cents! Steve

I use the premise that my grandfather used to do it. Very emotion eliciting.

Hi GW,
Thanks for the kind words. The children seem to enjoy it (of course, they always want to know where the wizards went!). Regards, Steve

Bump. I love these suggestions! I haven't ordered my HH set yet but I'm already starting to think of patter that has a reversed effect, so to speak:
The magician tries to get rid of the coin in order to do a trick he suddenly remembers which is great but needs only the one coin. The coin is put casually in the pocket and the magician is himself surprised at it's return. Second time and he puts it slower and more deliberately in his pocket. To make sure that doesn't happen again. But of course it does. He now begins to appear nervous and slightly embarrassed at what happened. Etc. You get the idea. Finally he will just have to give up as he has fumbled the magic completely and the coins are gone. Or he can then borrow or fish out a different more cooperative coin to do the one coin trick he wanted to show in the first place. I'm sure I though of this because of a Fred Kaps video clip I saw recently where a card trick keeps going wrong. I haven't even read the original HH routine since I don't have the coins yet, but if it's anything like the demo sales videos on YouTube, it needs changing for sure!

Steve,
Your poem for this routine (like youth itself) is too wonderful to be wasted on children. Well...at least not ONLY on children. It suits all ages and makes what I always considered a "throwaway" trick into a genuine performance piece. Thank you so much for sharing. Andre
