Hi,
I frequently have problems when practicing my card tricks with dry hands. I can't hold them properly, and have trouble shuffling because they slip too much in my hands. (Usually when performing I'm sweating so much this isn't a problem.) Can anyone recommend something I can do with my hands to help avoid this? |

Hand lotion. Very comon problem for card guys. Buy a small tube of a good hand lotion and keep it with you while performing. If you want to get realy serious, start a regiment of skin conditioning.

Dylan72,
Good question. Especially when you get older, dry hands become a problem. JackScratch is right, lotion is the answer. Be careful though, petroleum based lotions can make your hands slippery. Glycerin based products work best. You can mix your own rose water and glycerin. Many performers have used this concoction in the past and so have I. But the mixing is too much of a hassle for me. "Zim's Crack Cream" is a glycerin based product that really works. You can find it usually in the first aid section, not the hand lotion section of many drug stores. BTW: Be sure to get the Zim's Crack Cream in the little bottle, not the "Creamy Daytime Formula" in the tube. The stuff in the tube makes your hands sort of slick. The original formula in the bottle leaves your hands slightly tacky. Fellow Texan and friend Lonnie Chevrie told me about this product a number of years ago. I’ve used it since then and never mixed another batch of rose water and glycerin. Good luck, Gerald |

Hi Dylan,
This has been a pretty hot topic here over the years. Here are some links to other threads discussing this. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=2 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=10 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=3 There are many more similar threads to be found, using the Café Quicksearch feature at the top of the page (always a good place to start). Personally, I use "Sortquick." Best of luck! |

Staples sells Sortquick in a two pack. It comes with one large container (about the size of a hockey puck) and a small container (the size of a silver dollar).
I use the smaller size because it fits in my pocket easier. Gerald, Thanks for the "Zim's Crack Cream in the little bottle" tip. I will look for that product. Dan |

Here's another idea I have used over the years and I think is in one of the threads listed above, but what the heck: Bank tellers use a glecerin based product in those little round canisters you see at the bank. It's a semi-hard cake product. When I was doing close-up at cocktail parties I had one of these cakes Magician's Waxed to the inside of my table where I could access some at a moments notice and unseen. REALLY worked great! It does not take much to get the desired affect.
I was working on a way to carry one in my coat pocket, but didn't follow through. You have to be able to get AT it, but not have it exposed....the reason is that with too much heat it can melt and cause a real mess. Maybe someone out there has heard of a solution to the carry the glecerin cake in the pocket dilemma? Best,
Brad Burt

I haven't tried this but maybe putting some Sortquick in an oversized TT and then attaching it inside your pocket so if it melted it wouldn't spill.

After researching a bit (and yes, I did try using quicksearch too, but just didn't have the right keywords I guess) I came across SortKwik as well, and it seems like the stuff to go with. Only problem is it is not sold here (Australia), so I have to order it via the web.
Thanks for the pointers, especially Magiguy. Now I just need an oitment that can improve my double-lift and I'll be set.;-) |

The problem I have had with SortKwik is that you must keep re applying it. Lotion will last you for a good long while. Then of course there is the aforementioned convieniance issue.
As for using glycering based lotions. I believe the lotion I use is petrolium based. You can use them, but the trick to it is to apply early, not just immediately before the performance and also apply sparingly. A little goes a long way. The thing that makes Petrolium based lotions slyperly is the solvent in them. Once the solvent evaporates, you should be fine. I ofte wave my hands back and forth in wide arcs to help it evaporate. I'll have to look for that other cream suggested above. |

Michael Skinner's Edge Card Creme from Legerdomain is what I use...simply the best!

Look for products with glycerin. So far that is the best ingredient for dry hand rehydration.

I use the "Cornhuskers lotion" available from Wal-Mart.
It works well and it does not stain. |

I only have this problem at certain times of the year, but I think a longer-term solution is useful. I think I got this advice from a Brad Burt video, but I may be incorrect there.
During the day, whenever I wash and dry my hands, I apply a small amount of Lubriderm hand lotion. Lubriderm works not by actually moistening your hands, but by keeping in the moisture that accumulates in your pores after washing, so your hands shouldn't be bone dry when you apply it. IMPORTANT: I always wash my hands before handling cards, but this is the one time I DON'T apply the Lubriderm - I don't want the lotion to get on the cards. Anyway, it doing this seems to keep my hands from drying out in the first place. |

I hate to break this to you Foucault, but you have bought into their made up sales pitch. The moisture in your hands is not water. For purposes of living thing, water is the oposite of wet, it's dry. Water evaporates and causes dry rot. That what dry hands actualy is. When you wash you hands you dissolve and remove the natural oils in your hands. Lotion replaces those oils with a cleaner, more stable oil, usualy either lanolin (from sheep) or Glycerin (from a variety of sources). Keeping the moisture in is another one of those clever catch phrases some marketing personal came up with to sell lotion. For your skin, water bad.

Well, you learn something new every day - thanks for setting me straight, Drew!
Bottom line: using Lubriderm (which my wife has in the house anyway) during those times of the year I get dry hands seems to work for me. |

Lubriderm is actualy recomended by out Pediatritian for my Toddler. I Checked the ingredients and it starts with Water, however the water is pretty much the volital that holds everything else in solution. The Mineral oil, Petrolatum, Lanolin, and Glyceryl are the important ingredients. The water is the only thing in there that evaporates at room temperature.

This may clarify any misconceptions about dry skin... http://www.nicemuscle.com/na-pca-with-aloe-79583.htm BTW I have used this product and can testify in it's effectiveness, but I still prefer Skinner's Edge Creme.

I can't remember who told me about this. I think it was Mike Powers but I'm not sure.
Believe it or not listerine mouth wash (The yellow stuff) can be used like hand lotion. I've used it and it doesn't feel oily but allows me to grip well (Not in a sticky way like you would think). Put some in a little spray bottle. You can spray some on your hands and also freshen your breath. I know it sounds silly but it does work. Ron Jaxon |

I just picked up a little thing of neutrogena norwegian hand creme based off of one of the other threads, it works like a charm just about instantly, it says on the bottle "just a dab cures dry skin" and it means it, you can get a bottle of it for about 3 bucks and a half at a wal-mart (3.76 on my receit to be exact) it might be a small little tube, but for how well such a lil dab of the stuff works works, this stuff will last me quite a while on one tube, it's worth it.
I was having trouble doing a erdnase(sp?) color change cause my hands were so dry, not any more though, easy as pie. |
