Hello everyone,
I purchased this DVD, not previously owning any of Andrew's other material, and I have only seen the effects portion of the DVD, and I must say it is good. Production quality: 9 DVD Art: 9 Effects: 9 The most interesting sleight teaches you how to get duplicate signatures for the card at any location plot. Andrew uses the card in beer bottle idea. Overall, I need to sit down more carefully and review the DVD, but it is worth getting. We all can learn a little bit from this guy. Thanks Alex

I got it and went over it. All I can tell you is this: It Rocks! This is real world blow 'em away material with a skill level at my Basics of Expert Card Technique vol. 1 DVD.
It's clever material the 'effect' of which is all you could want for in card work. I don't 'mind' doing hard moves, but I'll take killer effect with a fairly easy approach every time over a more difficult way to achieve the same result. Mr. Normansell has a fine touch and Annemann like thinking. Best,

Can someone please explain what this is?
Is it a sleight, a card to impossible location or what? The only info I can see is that of a way to get a duplicate signature.... is it more advanced than doing a color change with a paper towel saying to be careful the ink might come off? |

As I understand it from speaking directly with Mr Normansell, it is a technique or techniques for performing magic under a "challenge" situation from a spectator. I can't be any clearer than that as I don't have the DVD, I only discussed it's content briefly with Andy at a recent meeting. All I can say is that Andy is a "real world" worker who makes his living from performing close-up magic and mentalism and has done so for many years. Any techniques he reveals on this DVD will have been born in the fires of experience from many performances for punters in the UK. Perhaps someone who has bought this and had a chance to really study it's contents can give a more thorough run-through.
Check out his website or contact him directly - he's a really pleasant guy and would be happy to help if you're unsure about purchasing the DVD. http://www.andrewnormansell.com/index.htm

It's rather a bunch of different techniques for perform under the challenge situation mentioned in the ad. Nothing earth-shattering or new principles, however incredibly useful when all the elements are put together into strong routines. I wasn't particular about his choice of routines, they seemed to go on and the patter was a bit rambling at times. Hard to focus on what was happening. However I think if polished and structured correctly, it's strong. I'd argue the price is a little on the high end for the concepts which are just variations of accomplishing the same thing.

I liked the dvd and what Mr. Normansell had to say, thought it was well produced.
The Tempest concept is a series of techniques and moves used in his real world underfire routines. If your advanced in card work or have a lot of performing experience this may not be for you. New magicians or people how have been away from magic for a while this is right up your alley. I found the dvd to be very useful, the production quality is top notch. |

The Tempest concept is a layering of methods to make unraveling the method impossible for spectators. The idea of having a spectator shuffle the deck and still knowing where the chosen card is has a lot of attraction. Unfortunately, for me the trade off for using this system eliminates the feeling of magic and creates the atmosphere of "obviously a sneaky trick".
Many people do not mind doing tricks and sneaky juggling; putting cards into the deck only to cut and cut and cut the deck to "loose the card" and then riffling the deck right in their line of sight. If this is you, this system will be of interest. More unfortunate is that the "peek" (I'd call it more of a gawk) taught here is just as blatant as the overdone card controlling. I really don't think an audience has to work too hard to put the pieces together when the magician riffles the cards in front of his own eyes three or four times. I found this performance to be a display of everything a magician should NOT do, including putting his hands into the jeans hip pocket of a spectator. If a male performer put his hand in my pocket like that I would put him on the floor. I have no doubt that if someone did this in a corporate show in my area it would not be long before he was shut down and asked to leave. Maybe it is a cultural difference, maybe not. Having said all that, one could take elements of this DVD and create one's own "system" with either a more subtle peek and less cutting of the cards; or with and entirely different solution to the outs needed when the chosen card strays from right where you wanted it during the spectator's shuffle. |

Having not seen the DVD I cannot comment on the above. Having worked gigs with Andy in the past though he definitely does have his own style of card handling (which is different to mine - I would say flowery as opposed to earthy!) and is VERY good at entertaining an audience whilst fooling the hell out of them at the same time.
In my own experience (which I admit is much less then Mr Normansells, and probably Tom Cutt's too) my response to a challenge e.g. "Can you do that if I shuffle the deck" has been to palm the card out, let them shuffle the deck and then replace the card and repeat the trick. That for me has knocked the challenge on it's head and "blown them away" at the same time. After repeating the trick "under their conditions" I then walk away so as not to allow further challenges saying something of the lines of "Well I don't think I can do any better than that! Martino.
