There's a new sophistication coming to the performing art of mentalism, and it's source is Looch. His Simple and Direct Mentalism book is the best book of 2006, at least, probably the best stuff I've read since Bob Cassidy's. Clear and well-written, this book has routines that -- when you read them -- you say to yourself, "That's what I was missing." Or, "yeah, I should have followed my instincts and gone ahead with that....' -- whether it's a move or a whole effect or a thing you say to the audience -- Looch has it in this book, called Simple and Direct mentalism.
Thanks, looch, for an honest and fine piece of work! fib |

My humble observations...
Simple and Direct. And that’s exactly the kind of mentalism that I enjoy performing. This beautifully produced book contains over 100 pages of thought-provoking routines - robust, beguiling close-up mentalism. Okay. So, mention has been made of the typos and the grammar. Frustrating as that is, let’s leave it alone for the moment. What matters is that you COULD use most of the effects straight-from-the-box. But this book’s real treasure is found by applying a little bit of thought to each effect: how it could be personalised to meet the performer’s style and pseudo-explanation. How pliable is this stuff? Well, let me give you an example. And for that example, let’s take the very first effect in the book: “A Nod to Pocket Watch.” Basically, you are performing a bog-standard “Here is the card you were thinking of” effect. But wait! What’s in this tin that’s been on the table throughout? A prediction of something that was mentioned by a random spectator, in passing... The participant thinks: “It COULD have been a card trick, but the follow-up couldn’t possibly involve trickery. It can only be that the performer is really able to influence me! So, it probably wasn’t a card trick, but was a demonstration of the performer subliminally taking charge of my thoughts, decisions and behaviour pattern. Wow! This is fascinating stuff!” Now, anything that makes the participant think along those lines HAS to be good. (And not many effects do!) But there’s more. Don’t want to use playing cards? Fine – use Zener symbols, or postcards, or bus tickets... Don’t want to use a metal tin? Fine - use an envelope or a wallet, or your shoe, for that matter. It’s an effect that has everything and would work wonderfully on stage; in cabaret, too. And that’s just the first effect! Because each effect is “Simple and Direct” there is a wide range of possibilities to change the props and the patter, without losing the Wow factor. And I LIKE that. So, if you are looking for a few effects around which you can build your own plot, to personalise and make your own, then this book is for you. And if you are looking for winning material upon which you can rely to bring gasps rather than polite applause then, again, this is the book for you. Either way, it’s got what you want. Drew Mcadam |

I just got S.A.D. and I am GLAD!
Going by Roth's post I read the Glitch routine first, and wouldn't ya know... I found that I have a mini deck of Tarot cards, and one will fit in the Outlaw Wallet. HEHEHE. Now I just have to work on the handling. With the small props I can do the whole thing in the hands for walk around gigs. Great Book, thanks Looch! J. Manuel
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Since this thread has been resurrected, let me say what I didn't say before:
I found S.A.D. to be a wonderful read, full of interesting and practical performance pieces. This is a fantastic book, and Looch deserves the credit and accolades he has received. Well done! Tony Iacoviello |

I'm so glad I did. The structure of the routine is lovely and fluid. I also understand that Looch has reworked some of the method/handling for this, which if I'm not mistaken will appear on the upcoming DVD. I for one am looking forward to this. No need for 'stealth promotion', I doubt that many who are familiar with his previous work will pass up the chance to see the creator of SAD perfom his own stuff. steve |
