It's not so much a trick as it is a stunt. Of course, the best way to learn such a thing is to learn from a pro. Todd Robbins will teach you Human Blockhead and more at his sideshow school. http://www.coneyisland.com/sideshow_school.shtml
There is another sideshow school that is more like a summer camp for sideshow, but I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the fellow who administers it. I'm so bad with names, please don't hold it against me! By the way, I think my best on Human Blockhead is an instant read meat thermometer. |

Anton, get one of the meat thermometers with graduations from 60 up to like 350. The ones with the markings for meat types are set for temps too high for the human body. Immerse the entire sensor (the metal rod part, not the whole thermo) in a glass of salty ice water (salt water has a much lower temp than 32 degrees). Keep this behind a prop. When you're ready for the act, simply wipe it with a clean rag and pop it in. I don't know how the chill will feel, but it will definitely show your body temp bringing it up to heat!

Greetings People!
Bit new to this blockhead, recently been experimenting after requesting advice from just about everyone! One thing I have found is that I don't have any problem at all with 4 inch nails that are about 4.8 millimetres wide, however the 5 inch nails I can get most of the way in my nose with about 6 millimetres length left protruding from the nostril which must be my maximum, also the main thing about these nails is the width, the packet says the 5 inch nails are 5mm, however upon measuring them myself they are about 6mm in reality. I'm still experimenting with sizes with the intention to order some nails from "thegreatnippulini" My question is, are all 5 inch nails the same width, I've tried B&Q in the UK and the only ones they sell here are bright steel 5mm x 125mm, like I said they are more like 6mm in width and 123 mm long, not quite what it says on the packet, I could do with something slightly smaller in width but maybe same length to perform with comfortably as giveaways. I'm looking for some 5 inch nails slightly thinner than the 6mm, ideally 5mm or slightly smaller like the 4 inch nails. Does anyone have any idea's where I can get something like that? Also any advice on the actual hammering techniques would be appreciated, I don't have any problems getting the nail in place all the way, but the tricky bit I have found is the actual performance of the hammering to make it look like hammering when in reality I'm not, that bit I am struggling with big time, any advice on technique would be great! Regards MC |

Well I've looked everywhere and cant find such a thing as a 4.75 inch nail that's as thin as a 4" nail and not as thick as a 5" nail, and no replies to my questions so I'm assuming they don't exist!
If anyone does come accross some UK shops selling 5 inch nails thinner than 6mm, the packets say 5mm but they are more like 6mm, if anyone comes accross some maybe 4mm wide 5 inch nails then please let me know by PM please. Thanks in advance. MC |

Sorry I didn't reply earlier.
I never really looked at nail sizes too much. From my experience, the thicker the nail (Up to a point) the easier and more comfortable it is. My favourite thing to stick up my nose is a phillips head screwdriver or bracelet glowstick. I can't help with hammering though. I've tried it once or twice, and it works allright, but honestly, the times I have seen it hammered in (Even before I knew how to do it myself) weren't really all that convincing. The one I liked, the nail was tapped in with the microphone. It made a great noise that the audience really reacted to. I did try that at a show about a month ago. It was nice because it was good and loud, implying a hard hit, yet the taps with the microphone were softer than anything you would do with a hammer. It allowed for a good deal of control. Just my thoughts, Gwyd |

Regards the hammer in>>> Hold the nail between thumb and finger to act as a restrictor to the hammer blows >>>> The tighter you hold the nail, the more forceful blows can be made with the hammer.
Re >>>> Nail size >>> Bear in mind the more you do it the larger diam width of nail will go in easy. Plenty of nails available here in the UK >>> Also spoons, chopsticks, drills, tent pegs etc etc should be no problem getting what you require. Nips does a grand job,,,,, also whats the problem,,,if they are too long cut them off and re-grind,,,,,ok Ken |

Also keep in mind that if you do the little tiki umbrellas, you can blow on them causing them to spin and eventually fly out of the nose.

I've been doing this close up at night; I made my own custom nail out of Plexiglas. It really gets them wondering because there is no way anything can be faked, it would be to visible. The really cool thing is, once the nail is in, I pull a small flashlight from my pocket, turn it on and shove it into my mouth. Now the head of the nail glows blood red... Ahh, I can hear teh screams even now...

That works?!?
How cool is that! I've been trying to find a flashlight that would fit up my nose to light up my mouth, when I have been going at it backwards!! Light up the mouth to glow the nose... SWEET! Gwyd |

Steve, that sounds like a marvelous idea. How are you making the nails?

Brett Loudermilk (Freak Prodigy) makes Pyrex glass nails. I would recommend those compared to plexi. Pyrex is a material better suited for being in your body. I've seen some nasty reactions the body goes trhough when exposed to the wrong kind of acrylics. Plus, Pyrex can be sterilized, is shatter resistant and overall safer. Plexiglas (which by the way is a trademarked name for acrylic products, kinda like Saran Wrap, Kleenex, Scotch Tape, Xerox, Post it, etc.) is soft and can scratch very easily. The scratches can irritate the mucus membranes and sinus tissues. Plexi can also melt when exposed to certain chemicals. Some types of acyrlics can CRACK just by being wiped simply with alcohol.
Buy a Pyrex nail from Brett. He invented them!
