Not me. I guess I must be a little harder to impress, and it's really not that hard!

Just be glad that most of the general TV watching public has a short memory... and hopefully esposé stuff like that won't show up again in reruns. There's enough bad TV out there as it is.

Has any magician actually been harmed by this expose of a con game? I would like to have anyone that has had trouble at a gig because of this show post his story here.

Well, I was performing the "Steal the Old Lady's Social Security Check Out of the Mailbox " routine and..............

It's actually kinda funny that magicians steal a routine from con men and claim it as their own and then complain when it is exposed. Go figure.

Obviously beating a dead horse

Exposure is wrong.

It is covered (exposure) in every organized Magical group's (I.B.M, S.A.M., etc) oaths/by laws, not to mention the Café's rules, and in every 'brick and mortar' Magic Shop I've ever been in...

The lengths that Magicians of old would go to protect their secrets is explained, ad noseum, in Steinmeyers (sp?) book, "Hiding the Elephant"...

My question is this, therefore:

Why is there even a question as to the ethics of a Magician of note, i.e. Magician of the Year, Criss Angel, exposing effects being WRONG?

It is, to me, a fore-gone conclusion that what he is doing, by exposing effects such as: salt shaker through table; lipstick (ash) transfer; and others, is nothing more than an ego gone wild...

I am the Magi of the Year (3 years in a row)....

I do whatever I want.

No matter how you color it, it's still wrong.

Out of all the post I have read this one makes the most sense! This stuff was invented by con men anyhow! The old saying is true never give game to a lame! Criss is a lame with the game and he is ruining it for everybody!

The mafia calls people like criss angel a rat! Where I come from we call him a snitcher! Some would call him a informer! If he wants to reveal something let him reveal some of that crap he keeps to himself! don't reveal the stuff that is hush hush

As I stated in another thread on this same subject, a magic trick was not exposed, the workings of a crime was. And since it has brought some anguish to at least one street hustler, then the demonstration was on some level a success.

Todd let me ****yze you one minute. now what crime is the 3cm? You are sitting here playing with your cards and some sucker comes along. what a dunce! what a mark! hey mark didn't your mom and dad tell you that you cant get something for nothing or were they complete morons also!!???? so let me get this right some guys pulled guns or knives on you and made you take your money out of your pocket and place a bet? hmm! you liar! lol. You were a sucker who had larceny in his heart and you were like a fish who thought he was getting a nice fat worm to eat but you found out that it was a hook in that bait and you got took! There is no crime! The trick did it to himself! Next todd you are gonna tell me that drug dealers were entrapped into selling dope lol. The big drug dealers made it look good to me therefore I shouldnt go to jail because its there fault! lol. Todd learn to accept responsibility for your faults and stop blaming other people. If you bet on the monte or shell and you lose you did it to yourself!!!!!!! Nobody forced you!

Just this morning in briefing, I saw one of our officers with a large roll of money. I joked that I had three cards and all he had to do was find the Queen. My lieutenant then told the officer to arrest me if I take the money. Needless to say, I know what law this falls under.

I'm brand new to this forum and was already admonished for asking an ethical question, so I'll tread softly here. I've had the discussion about exposure, teaching, what's acceptable and what isn't with many of the biggest names in magic and it seems there are two equally valid schools of thought. (Each with subtle variations and caveats, but that would take up pages.)

Personally I side with those who say that teaching simple tricks and exposing con games is an acceptable practice with a long history. Houdini, for one obvious example, was not above exposing the workings of spirit mediums, other escape artists and even magicians in his career. Publicly, from the stage, which in his day was equivalent to doing it on TV. He didn't ruin the art, and I don't think the masked magician and his ilk have done any lasting damage either.

But I understand and empathise with those who are opposed to teaching and exposure, because the secrets we hold are a big part of what makes magic "magic" and makes the magician special. And weren't we all taught early on that a magician never reveals the secret? So there is an emotional aspect to this point of view that I can understand.

The question here is specifically about Johnny Thompson, Criss Angel and the three shell game. I often close my close up shows with a three shell routine, so if anyone were to be damaged by the exposure I would be counted among them. And since I didn't see the segment in question I cannot comment on the context and "tone" of the teaching/exposure. Yet I am certain that anyone who watched that exposure could come see me work the shells and still be completely mystified. No damage done.

As to whether this was ethical or not I maintain that arguments like these will go on forever, neither side will convince the other, and in the end magic will still be "magic" in the hands of good practitioners. It's moot.

Memphis there is a massive difference between gambling and a hustle or a con.
Gambling is 2 or more parties with agreed apon rules and odds
Monte and the Shell game have neither. I go to vegas or any other casino and walk up to a dealer and ask the odds at any table they will tell you. Ask the rules they will tell you.
I can tell you the odds in 3 card or the shell game arn't the 1-3 they tell you. And try and call them on a "rule"
