Hello. I am very interested in beginning dove magic. I would like to do a musical manipulation type of act at the start of my show. I have no previous experience in dove magic. I only know that you steal the birds and use the vanishing bird cage for the finale. Other than that I am at a complete loss. Could somebody point me in the right direction as to where I begin. Any books, videos or website reccomendations would be greatly appreciated. Also, I know of another magician who had to get a dove suit custom made. Is this necessary? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Chris, as many of us will tell you, you may want to start with a Search here on the Café. This topic has been discussed a multitude of times. *smile* The advice that I can offer to you right now from reading your post is that you may be getting a little ahead of yourself. I think the best thing that you should do right now before even starting in dove magic, is learn about Doves first. There are many Internet sites, and books at libraries that you can read up on doves as a species.
Dove magic is not as easy as people think. Doves are pets and need proper care and handling before you can start using them in shows. At least from a "steal" point of view. Doves are a lot of work in the "taking care" department. They must have the proper nutrition, excercise, and plain 'ol TLC. As for magic videos, you can get Tony Clark's series, Andy Amyx series, Greg Frewin's series, and there may be a couple more that I am sure someone will tell you about, but again, do a search here and you will find countless information. A good website to learn about doves is http://www.dovepage.com It will give you basic care of doves and different types of doves. There is a lot to learn before obtaining these animals. I suggest doing your homework first. *smile* Something else you stated in your question was that the "stealing" and finishing with a vanishing dove cage. That is only one method of a routine. Use your imagination with your own type of routine and come up with something that is original to you. 98% of any act is YOU, not the props. The props are going to work regardless, but only YOU make the magic - if that makes any sense. Hope this helps some.. |

Good advice, Alpha. Some additional resources are The encyclopedia of Dove magic, General Grants video, and Shimada on doves.
Chris, as Alpha pointed out, you are way ahead of yourself. Doing a dove act isn't a matter of getting some birds and start producing them. There's care and feeding, training, practice and above all, dedication. You have to spend a lot of time with your birds all the time. There is so much more to dove magic that stealing and vanishing. Most magicians jump the gun and go right into this form of dove magic. There are props that can be used and you must decide what type of venue you are going to work in. If you do parties etc, you may not want to do dove steals but props work well. If you are primarily going to do stage acts, then stealing is good. Depending on how many birds you intend to use, you may or may not want to have a suit made. For one or two birds, a regular suit or tux will be fine. Good dove acts take many months and sometimes years to develope. You need to do all the research first before getting your birds. Besides the resources listed above, make sure you get some books on dove health as well. You need to know how to take care of your birds. Many of the magic resources explain what to feed them and what vitamins they need but there is much more to raising and caring for doves than feeding. Thanks for the info guys. I do shows for resorts and I am looking to add a musical manipulation segment to the show since some of the stages that I work are a bit far from the audience and difficult to bring spectators up for my talking act. I understand I have to learn to train the doves and work with them. I am looking at Tony Clark's 3 DVD set, is this any good? This may be a good ways down the line since just to get doves on the island is very expensive. I want to keep it simple. I am looking at perhaps producing two doves without body loads using props and then producing two of them using steals and then ending with the vanishing cage. Will I get all the info I need for this type of act from the Tony Clark DVD's? I assume from what Dave said that I can do two dove steals using a regular coat with some alterations?
Thanks again guys, -=Chris |

Chris, your assumption about the coat is correct but you will need to make alterations to it.
Tony Clarks series is an excellent choice, in fact he shows several very easy effects with props.

Yes, Tony's DVD's are a good source for producing doves without body loads. That would be a great start.
