Poking the holes did the trick. That is the concern right now. The box are almost air tight. With the holes in the membranes, it kind of defeats the purpose of the bio box but I won't tell anyone.

Thanks, Dave. Shhhh... It kept my birds alive. The box actually might not be air tight, but I am not really sure. Supposedly it is a permeable membrane. (But viruses are so small that this permeability would make the point of the box moot.)
I would suggest contacting a pigeon club to see if they use these boxes or have had any problems. Those racing pigeons cost thousands of dollars each and a pigeon fancier will surely not put her/his bird in a box that will smother the critter.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

It seems that there should be something that let's air in but keeps the virus from getting out. My great-niece was diagnosed with ALL last May, and she has to wear these protective masks when she goes out in public. Those masks came to mind when I heard of the bio-box problem. It may not be safe enough, but surely with the technology available today something is available. It seems it would be the resposibility of the shipper to provide something that will let live animals breathe.

There has been a change of attitude at the Post Office about containers and shipping birds. When I inquired this month I was told, "Fighting roosters can be shipped through the Post Office in homemade wood and wire containers." Plus I could hear the roosters crowing in the back of the Post Office. Apparently, the "required" shipping containers are not required if the birds are intended for illegal purposes. (That is fighting to the death for illegal gambling.) Ask your Congressman. He's possibily too new buy that line.
I'm afraid I'm getting closer to the truth than a magician can accept! I wonder if they still consider peaceful magic doves too dangerous to not be shipped in the designated inferior box. We would not want to endanger a fighting rooster on his way to gamblers waiting at an illegal rooster fight. The government has priorties and your money and resources. It begs the question, "If dove magic were illegal, could magic doves be shipped the same as fighting roosters?" Actually, we aren't asking for a favor, just equal treatment. Perhaps they could use some of the thousands of never-used FEMA trailers to transport them to a more dangerous area of illegal activity. Thus, government objectives could be preserved. I understand that Dakota has shipped some doves in the new containers and he said they weren't too bad. Still, it is a pain. I can see the want ads now. "Doves for sale. Order before Tuesday and we'll include a free fighting rooster" Sounds like a deal that couldn't be passed up

I just talked to the breeder that I know here in Cincinnati and he continues to ship his birds with no problems. He shipped two to California just yesterday. The cost is the real problem. $100.00 for two to go Delta.

Chris: The question here is for shipping through the post office. Shipping commercial airlines has always been expensive where as the post office was generally around $25.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was thinking that just shipping them was the problem. I have reread the posts to try and understand the concerns. Has any one used these containers? I went out to eat to tonight with one of Governments finest Mail Clerks. I ask him to get the shipping information for me for sending birds through the mail. He is bringing one of their regulation books to church tomorrow. However he told me that all "overnight mail is automatically insured for $500.00. Now I do not want any birds harmed but should they die in transit it seems you would be compensated. He told of a large shipment of ducks at his mail center that died (they were placed in a room and forgotten for three days)and they had to pay. The price would still go up the $20.00 for the box I guess but the box could be returned and reused for less than the original cost of the box. ChrisG

Just wanted to let you all know that I have a few more babies that are looking for a magical home. I have the 'biological secure boxes". (Ha, Ha) But the boxes seem to be doing OK in shipping. (Just cost more to ship.)
Just PM me. Dakota Rose

You do realize that reusing the boxes completely defeats the stated purpose of virus control? But with no storage requirements either, there was never a reason to expect the outside of the box to be less contaminated than the birds. The greater joke is that the final "Virus Screens" don't screen viruses. They were modified to allow oxygen into the box. (Rule to remember: If the Government does it, it doesn't need doing. Or "Form over Substance 'R' Us". Even worse, is that the new Congress plans more stupidity.)
