JoeJoe hit the nail on the head when he said, "Your points are all irrelevant - did you read the inital post? This is not a topic about 'confronting' strangers - it is a topic of getting strangers to approach you."
I mean come on I tried to explain I have been performing semi-professionally for 4 years and have been doing magic as a hobby for over 11. I get good paying jobs that net $100 an hour which for the area I live in is very good. The whole point of this topic was to see if anyone else had ways where they would advertently (for street performances) or inadvertently get asked to do a trick or something of that nature by strangers. In the right social environment, like a college this is not a odd thing to happen and it really is a great way to surprise and give someone something to talk about. I am surprised myself at what this topic has turned into and am surprised at how quickly people can bash someone else for doing something they have not tried or don't understand. To assume motives is what bugs me the most. I have been in magic long enough to know a good deal about performing and having been around enough of the Blaine type I can say my reason for performing for strangers are a lot different than most of the people I have met. I hope this clarifies things a bit better so maybe things can clam down a bit.

I'm sorry. I guess I work so much that I don't WANT/NEED anyone to come up and ask me to do a trick.

GoCall911: here's an idea you might want to try ... as I said earlier, you need a good hat - the hat is what commands attention. When I wear my hat around town (as in, to Walmart or the flea market - in normal clothes), people will sometimes comment "nice hat". I normally just smile and say thank you ... in fact, because the attention it draws I stopped wearing it around town like that (which is a shame because I like my hat).
So ... you find a good hat, and when someone comments on it ... ask them if they want to see you pull a rabbit out of the hat. Then produce a sponge rabbit from the hat ... don't have a sponge rabbit? Pull out a spounge ball and call it a "dust bunny" or something. Your now in position to show them a magic trick, and they are the one that approached you. -JoeJoe

How about a shirt that says "despirate to perform"?
Or better yet get a job as a magician, you will do so many tricks you won't want anyone to ask you.

There is such a thing as being ON. When I perform, I am ON. When I am done, I am OFF and don't necessarily want to be asked to perform. If you NEED the attention or are just looking to practice your latest cool move, try some magic out on your school buddies or co workers. Don't bother unsuspecting people on the street. And YES, there is a BIG difference between being a street performer and just wanting people to ask you to show them the trick.

It's sad that you work so hard you don't want to do a magic trick for fun ... perhaps you should take some time off and relax a little - maybe then you will remember what is was like to be hungry?
And nobody here ever suggested that he was trying to be a street performer - relax, he just wants to show people some magic tricks ... nobody is trying to upstage you. The Café is here for magicians of ALL levels, not just you seasoned pro types. -JoeJoe

Oh I do it for fun as well. If I didn't have fun, I wouldn't be doing it for a full time living. I just know when to stop. I'm not that big of an attention ho. |

JoeJoe, lost in your point is the "spectators point of view".
He is not kidding when he says it is a "bother" to people. And when people "bother" others with magic, it reflects poorly on all of us. Teaching the boy some of the ways to get along in life is not such a bad thing. Wanting to perform is one thing, acting on the impulse is another entirley. I still think that even Ammar who people brought up earlier, goes way too far. Singers don't do it, name another profession that does it. Go on name ONE. Just one. I bet if you think long enough you can. Oh wait I was just tackled by a linebacker yesterday who was trying to make it to the NFL. Funny thing is I found it far more fun and brightened my day more than the zillionth phase of ACR I saw someone who just walked up to me to show me. Oh and if you have to use some "con" to get them to ask you to do a trick, it still qualifies as "ambush magic". Don't give me the "well they asked" nonsense. If you con them into asking it is not really the same as having them ask. That is somewhat akin to calling a hold up at an ATM a "routine banking transaction".

Once again this whole thing is getting carried away JoeJoe's post about the hat is along the lines of what I have been trying to turn this into all along. When I first bought the shirt in question I though "hey cool inside joke for magicians". I wore it around a bit since I saw no problem with it. I found myself being asked "...well are you going to do a trick" by people just hanging around waiting in line here or there or in some other situation. So I thought hey I better be ready when I wear this shirt, and from there I got the idea hey I can use this as a draw for busking, less formal paid gigs, or just for fun when it is NOT A BOTHER. I thought of it as a cool find that works great, even for paying jobs, for getting people to draw themselves into the magic of the moment. Whats more magical than meeting someone new and breaking the ice? In the right place this is a great way to do that where people feel like they have done something to start the magic. As I said before I do 90% paid jobs but sometimes with the money trouble I have making it through college I put to much focus on the money. Sure I love doing magic and I always will but I also try to keep myself in check by performing in other non-bothersome situations for no other reason than the practice and getting to know someone new. I know everyone is saying well its time to turn off the magic. Sure I agree and I know when it is not time to perform. Unlike what someone said earlier I think the whole point of our art is to brighten someone's day. What could be better pay, and gain to the art than a smile? This is why I started so many years ago and this is why I still try and bring a little bit of happiness to others when I can. I have many times learned the hard way where not to do magic but I can gladly say I am better for it. Thank to everyone who has responded critisism or not. I am thankful for all responses and will gladly hear what everyones thoughts are but I thought it might be the right time to share my own thought on the subject as well.
