Hi Folks,
I've searched the Café, but have yet to find my answer to the following: I'm working on something in which I need quite a thick stream of salt to come out of my hand for maybe 10 or 15 seconds. My hand will be under a cloth, but the most important thing about is that it is easy to reset, it has a shorter time but thicker stream, I can end it easily at any time, and hopefully it's inexpensive. Do you guys have any ideas? If you need more details PM me. Ben |

Your hand is under a cloth during the pour? A box of salt!

A chain of white beads (pearl-like), dropping one end, and wiggling back and forth, looks close-enough to a stream of salt. It can go on and on, as long as you "sell it". When you want to finish, let go of the top end.
Also, very easy to re-set. This was not my idea, I saw it in a lecture at some time. (Something in the back of my mind tells me that C&M Magic, out of Washington State, used to sell this as part of a bigger routine, but I can't find a website for them any more.) - Donald

I second Pete's suggestion; a racquetball or similar works pretty well for the large load.

The ball idea is the way to go for a couple of reasons. One is the volume which the bigger the hand and the bigger the ball the longer the pour. And done correctly it is a very long pour. Under a spotlight the flow of salt does not have to be excessive for the white sparkle of the salt to create the illusion of volume. Plus because of the nature of the ball's working the stream can be very wide and shallow increasing the illusion of volume. A little add-on an old pro taught me was having some loose salt in the pocket from where the ball was stolen; he didn't use a holdout. As the salt ran out, after ditching the ball he would hold his hand of the hat, pot or whatever and slowly let these last stolen grains fall even wringing his fingers clear of the last bits of salt between his fingers from a very open hand.

Re: using beads as an alternative.
I haven't done it, nor bought it, just remember seeing it. It was many years ago. Maybe someone else could chime in with your answer, who knows more. - Donald

Sounds like the vernet pour ball might fill the bill at 10 or so seconds. They are cheap so you can get a few of them, and at the opposite side from the pour they have a finger dimple which allows a hand to hand transfer in the open with good angles. Flesh tone like a TT. They also come with tiny funnels and a spare tt if you can use it. It seems its better to work it in the open without a cloth so its just running out of your hands. The cloth sound kind of like an effect killer. they run about the size of a regular to large walnut. Its hard to beat being able to move it on your finger tip. Just some thoughts. Jim Riser may have a large stage model still. It will be spendy, but your also buying a very collectible utility so don't be afraid. His stamp in the bottom means it will hold value or increase in value.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.
