Hi, I've been trying to get the one-hand top palm down but I have a few questions about it.
Is the card supposed to pop right into the classic palm position or do you have to lever the card into the classic palm position? I find myself having to lever the card into the classic palm position with my pinky instead of it popping right into the palm position itself. Or...does it not matter as long as you get the misdirection right and people don't see it? |

When I do it (and I've been doing it for almost 30 years now) it is levered into the palm position with the pinky of the hand... that is, I press with the pinky and it almost swivels into the palm. At least that's the way I was taught and it's worked well for me.

If the card shoots out towards the side of your hand you are on the right road. All you have to do then is practice on your aim using the pinky. Make sure your first finger is the very corner of the packet. One-hand top palm is more feel than anything. This is one of the sleights I practise while watching tv or riding in the car etc. Practice, practice, practice.

I don't see how this move can pop up into the classic palm postion. Can you
clarify? In all cases it is levered? This is one my favorite moves, but it takes some serious practice to get it nice. Kosta Kimslat has nice routine using this move.

Can't speak for everyone, but mine is levered... that's the way I learned it. I would practice taking a deck of cards, do the one-hand palm, take that card and reverse it and place it on the bottom of the deck, then repeat it. When I had gone through the deck twice, I would stop... it would be 104 times of practice. A couple days into it, it was working pretty well and after a week it was pretty much second nature.

First of all the one hand top palm is a very deceptive sleight.i mean it is hard for a layman to catch you doing it.that is if it doesn't take you minutes to do it.
when I was learning this I used to lever the card into CP but with time I have it pop right into place. it's something you develop over time. and this feels most comfortable to me. you'll find out how it works best for you. good luck! -Matt

Keep in mind that there is more then one "one handed top palm" out there. So that's where some confusion might be coming from as far as the "Lever/Pops" up.
But I'm pretty sure most of us will be talking about the same move. And my description of how it works is that the card is both levered and pop's up into palm. It all depends on how you do it. I learned the move from Paul Harris. In his routine the one handed top palm is a visual color change. Actually he turns the card into a coin in the routine I learned from but that's just because a coin is hidden under the top card. But without that coin there it's just a color change. When doing it this way the pinky levers the card up quickly and it "pops" into the palm. I think the other most common use is to palm a card as you place the deck on the table or in someone's hand. It doesn't need to be done as quickly for this use. I had a heck of a time getting it down when I first learned it. It would stick out to the sides and I had a hard time getting it to stay in the classic palm position. When I finally got it down I found out from another magician that it was making a lot of noise. It was making a "click" noise from brushing against my thumb on the way to classic palm position. To remedy this I had to adjust my thumb position. As a result it was like going back to the drawing board again because I had to get use to this new grip to prevent the noise. It was a matter of which direction I push with my pinky. They're right. It'll take a lot of practice to do it well. If you're getting it to lift off the deck then you're on the right track. Just keep working on it. It'll come. Ron Jaxon |

I do it like Chatterbox41 and the card pops into the palm.
A slight side jog can help. Also I''ll sometimes curl my index finger onto the deck, contact the card. This helps buckle the card firmly into palm. Misdirection can't hurt. |

I just ran through mine while sitting here... I hold the 4 fingers at the outer end of the deck and the thumb on the inner end of the deck, hand/fingers loosely curled over the deck. Pinky finger is on the outside corner of the deck. Seems as the pinky slides forward and puts a slight pressure on the corner the card levers up into the palm.
Seems when I was first learning this, I used to walk around with a card palmed in my hand for hours at a time just trying to get a feel of where the card should be. Then as I practiced the levering action (as I described my practice sessions in the earlier post) I could feel when I had it right. Mine doesn't really pop into the hand... it's not a deceptively fast move for me like in Ron's post. The move seems to be covered by a turning of the hand, etc. I'll have to check out the Paul Harris effect and see how that feels. Sounds like a nice effect that would give me something new to work on. Gary |

Paul Harris simplified the Pass as well as the Top Palm into a way that was easier for me to learn. It is still going to take lots of practise. Jay Sankey also goes over these and other moves in his video Revolutionary Card Magic. Also get up with a magician buddy and bounce ideas off of them. Sometimes we try to hard and that frustrates us. Sounds like you are on the right track though...its all about feel (and if you are holding your mouth right).
