No you certainly can't.
I hope this doesn't get moved, although technically this for the card threads, but I’m looking for comedy lines... So, you've passed the card to the bottom, done three false shuffles and an overhand shuffle bringing the card to the top, when, All of a sudden "Can I shuffle the cards...?” Its happened countless times but I’ve never really thought of anything clever to say sometimes I might say Only if you can do a perfect in faro. What’s a perfect in faro? Umm it’s very complicated and I'm sure you wouldn't be able to do it. I'll shuffle them a bit more (very sloppy shuffle, with cards going everywhere) Or some other random improvised comment, but still it kind of puts a lot of heat on the deck. Any good lines you use to get outta it!?!?! Thanks, Matt P.s. I do not want to palm off the card! |

I have had this happen and I hand them the cards they shuffle, I then take them back and in front of everyone simply put the deck back in order. mumbling all the time had they not wanted to shuffle this would have been a lot easier. I then false cut and shuffle as if it where all just a joke,

Ok thanks, I like the idea and I have used something similar but its pretty obvious your re-setting? And if they take the top card turn it over and its there card, your pretty much busted for false shuffling and they will not believe that any of your shuffles are real, I think I'm talking sense (I'm not sure)
Maybe I'm looking at this to deep now... |

Although I like Calamari's approach, I simply play up to their suspicions and blow them off. My character can generally get away with it.
"No! It'll mess up my stack!" "No! Stick to the script." "Who's bit is this? Get your own cards!" "Riiiight. Mess with the magic guy. Leave him home next time, will ya?" "He watches one trick and thinks he's David Blaine! No!" Skip

I usually get a peek at the card while shuffling it back into the deck. If they ask to shuffle the deck, I act hesitant & let them do it. When they are done shuffling them, I make a BIG deal about how well they mixed them & how they messed up my trick, as I spread them face up. I then get the card to the top or bottom & proceed to do whatever effect I had in mind.
I love how people act like they really got over on me when they get to shuffle. Ichazod |

Maybe tell them a terrible and funny story about what happened the last time you passed the cards out to be shuffled.
"You know, I used to let people do that until one time the guy ... " While you tell the story, keep mixing em up til they're no longer suspicious. Or say, I like shuffling them too. You can shuffle some, but I want some, too. Which half? Then magician's choice them. Just some ideas. |

Thursday that happened at a gig after my initial card part of a routine.
During the routine the force was with me...I got it back and began to shuffle the cards myself and waited. Luckily the spectator repeated his request. I feigned reluctance and the tension/status changed a few times...then of course I said yes..but as he was shuffling..."then you find it." Status and conflict make good theatre and comedy. This was something I just thought about, but if they already chose a card and they ask you to shuffle, control it to the top, then do a one hand top palm. You can then let them shuffle and when they return the deck you have the card back on top.

How about, if you just peek a card, cut it middle of the deck, give deck to spectator who wants mix em, get another deck form you pocket, fan it face yourself, cut right card to right place and say: "meanwhile you mix cards, I will continue the trick" and continue from there where you were when you had to stop...

Act surprised and say 'why?, don't you trust me?'
As you do this pull the top card back with the left thumb and press the right thumbnail into the rear short edge of the top (chosen) card. Give the cards a casual cut and then hand them to the spectator and tell him to go for it! When you get the cards back you will have no problem locating the selection and bringing it back to the top. It was the late Ivor Parry (Rovi) who showed me this and I've used it for years.

I think if this is happening to you a lot there is a reason. It almost never happens to me. Either your scripting needs work so the have no chance to ask, or your being to suspicious and they think they can catch you up. In which case your presentation and personality need work.

Keep a second deck in your pocket.
When they ask throw the other deck on the table and say "No, but you can shuffle these ones if it keeps you happy" |

Outs precautions and challenges for ambitious card workers by Charles Hopkins.
Its cheap at under $5 and short to read but with the hard core, real deal answers and techniques that you need. Some areas and regions have more shufflers than others if you travel a bit. The book describes what to do for 'shufflers','I forgots' and the dreaded 'I refuse to tell, your the magician you tell me' people. Many various methods that all work. 1. Know what you are doing and how to recover before you start. This is what professionals do. Not carry an invisible deck in every coat's pocket. 2. When you know what to do, the tension is gone and the smiles and lines just flow. the doubting spectators acuatly appreciate you more because you recovered from them, and it looks like you can (and you can) recover from most anything.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

I have not had this happen very often, but if it does, then just hand them the deck to let them shuffle it, and when they are finished, proceed with one of the routines in Paul Cummin's lecture notes FASDIU. After performing one of those routines, for all routines after that, you can pretty much set up the deck while talking with them, and they won't even know or be suspicious because they were blown away from the routines you did with the deck that they shuffled.
