I carry a lot of stuff because I like to do a lot of different tricks. I could easily get by doing the same 4-5 tricks 3 hours a night, 4 days a week, 52 weeks a year. I would get bored. When I am booked for on site store promotions, where you can only do a couple of effects, then I carry very little on me. Also, I just love to learn new effects. I have several routines that I perform every night, but I like to incorporate new material often. Working the same places week after week, year after year, also, means seeing some of the same people on a regular basis. I always want to offer them something new.

I personally have all my working gear kept in a nice foam-lined briefcase where the effects go into their allotted spots. I then transfer everything into their appropriate pockets in my suit before the gig. Nothing ever changes, really. Even after all the Magic Fridays, it is rare that I change my Working Repertoire.
Rope in right suit pocket. Chop Cup in right pants pocket. Sponge Balls in left pants pocket. Elastics on right wrist. Expensive watch on left Joshua Jay Carrier Case on belt, etc. etc. etc. I can't even fathom the idea of a fanny pack, apron, or pouch (no offense to anyone that does, obviously). How does your suit look with that on? Are you able to hide it somehow? Curious, jamie

I don't normally wear suits... just an open jacket. The main reason for a leather fanny pack in front is... the smoothest possible loading for chop cup or cups and balls finale (yes... I know you can load from jacket pockets but I prefer less distance and less movement). With the fanny pack all your props are at hand, and ditching is all but invisible. I also like the variety that comes from having a good selection of effects at hand... and.. no it doesn't look overly bulky.

My new product will be a flat-ish pouch worn on the belt and will have 2 zipper compartments. a large one for ninja rings, decks, or a finger chopper. a smaller one for smallish props like pins, CCknives, rubberbands. the small one will also have my standard coin slots for sets of coins. there will be a flat pocket for packet tricks or x-cards. even a place to quickly ditch a tip(gratuity). that's about it. flat pockets are awesome becuase they can be used to hold many many things, great for ditching small items, like coins or a TT but they take up no room. the goal here is "invisible". to be worn strolling while wearing a suit jacket. The ability to wear more than one at the same time is also a benefit.
not big enough to hold everything I can think of. just big enough to empty my pockets of most items. ninja rings in a suit jacket pocket feel very heavy. worn in a pouch like this they are practically weightless.

Sounds like a much-needed product Frank. Can't wait to see it. Couple of questions for you: Will it be modular (ie buy 1, 2 or 3 to add to your belt for whatever you need to store.. they can be different shapes/sizes to accommodate different props) and... What is the ETA?

I would think that wearing a fanny pack in the front would lead to a pretty good assumption by the spectators as to where the final loads came from or where the (name the item) vanished to. Very funny occurrance happened last week. I always, always, always work with my sleeves rolled up. Since I don't sleeve anything and all the pull effects I do come from the inside of my jacket, working with my sleeves rolled up eliminates the "up the sleeve" solution from the spectators. Last week for some odd reason, I approached my first table with my sleeves down. The first comment made by a woman after I vanished a coin was "It went up his sleeve". I guess my point is, that if you are producing large objects under a chop cup or cups and balls and you are wearing a fanny pack or any other visible object large enough to hold the items that appear under the cups, the spectator has pretty good odds of figuring out where the items came from. Just my thoughts.

I have endeavored over the years to eliminate all routines which I have not created. This is a task which is very hard to do. I have also tried to eliminate any and all gaffs which I could not perform more than one routine with. This is a goal which is not as hard as one might think as long as you are willing to let go the gimmick of the day thought. I am not saying that I do not carry any props at all but they are very few.
I carry a normal coin purse which has 5 silver dollars in it. Two silks in my breast pocket, known as the Slydini silks. Two decks of cards, they are normal decks. A set of mini cups and balls, no final loads are necessary. My magic wand which I place in my back pocket, it breaks down into two pieces. Misled is the only one which has a specific effect it is used for. (However you could use it as your wand and it would be a bit more versatile) Last I wear a bottle production gimmick on my belt but I do not have a bottle in it. I try to find the load as I go along. I believe I could perform for a week and never perform the same trick twice unless I want to. I do have my three favorite routines I perform and do them as often as possible, instead of trying to do different tricks all the time. I think that is what everyone should try to do. Think of it this way when a comedian goes on tour he does not write a new routine for every gig he does the same one over and over. The material does not change the audience does. Taking into consideration that you may have people that follow and watch the whole time you perform you will need to change your effects. That is why you have to be able to perform many routines with the same materials. It is like a painter who makes many different pictures using the same paints and brushes. Enough with the lecture I want to answer the original question that started this thread “what prop frustrates me as far as pocket management...?" I would have to say the cups and balls without a doubt. It is a favorite with most audience it is packed with magical happenings from start to finish and yet a set is hard to carry and hard to perform in most situations. I take them everywhere I go and rarely carry them when performing but I have them in case the opportunity arises to amaze the audience. So if anyone knows a way to make carrying these really practical I would be all ears. |

Ragman - You could start by creating a routine using this folding cup from REI. Its plastic and folds completely flat. "Chop it" by adding a shim to the right location.

No one should be wearing a fanny pack. Ever. Not to the store. Not at an amusement park. And especially not while wearing a suit.

Me too and that's what I don't like. I tried putting my ninja rings in my topit and it feels horrible. very bulky. inside a pouch on my belt and they feel lighter than air.
a final design change was to add a small flat pocket right in front. this will be a great place for business cards or other small do-dahs. so the pouch is basically a large zipper pouch with a flat pocket in front of it a small zipper pouch with a flat pocket in front of it and they're sewn together, of course. it will be 2" wide at the bottom and 1" wide at the top. about 6" long and 5" tall. after I get the prototype and try it out we'll see about necessary changes, if any.

I keep a regular deck of cards in my jacket pocket and a matching gaffed deck in my toppit which is open into my jacket pocket. I start with the regular deck, do a switchout to the gaffed one and end by caseing the gaffed deck and vanishing it into my toppit. Now I'm reset for the next table

For me, lugging that *&%# Origami Illusion from table to table is a real pain...!
Actually, for me, the linking pins can be problematic when I'm also doing the color changing knives with the smash climax and some coin work and the chop cup.... no joke there... it's a matter of mass and weight ruining the hand of the clothes. Not to mention the dificulty of getting AT the smash knife climax! Lee Darrow, C.H.

That's why you need one of my "squeeze cases" for the smash knives. the case stays upside down in your pocket and the smash knives empty into your hand when you give the case a gentle squeeze-y-poo.
don't squeeze too hard. that puts too much emphasis on the poo and you end up with a real mess on your hands. http://www.theambitiouscard.com/aItem.cfm?itemid=10

No pix yet. I'm expecting by the end of the week. I even insisted that the prototype didn't need to be pretty just make one!!! I guess maybe it should be pretty if I'm taking pictures of it.
I really can't wait! No kidding. If you knew how grumpy I felt walking from the car to my gig in my suit you'd understand how bad I want one of these puppies. I felt like a con man selling watches out of my jacket. No more of that for me.
