Here's what D's doing next...

David Blaine, The Salvation Army and Target Kick-Off the 2-Day Sale to
Bring Joy to Deserving Families This Holiday Season

NEW YORK, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ --

WHAT/WHO: This Thanksgiving, Target is presenting David Blaine -- the
world's greatest endurance artist and magician -- with one of
his biggest challenges yet. As part of his challenge, he will
attempt to escape from shackles while dangling four stories
above Times Square in time for the Target 2-Day Sale.

Target and David Blaine are joining together to present this
event to benefit The Salvation Army and kick-off a dazzling
holiday shopping season. If David Blaine successfully completes
this feat, 100 deserving children will have a surprising and
unforgettable start to the Christmas season.

Target and David Blaine will reveal the closely guarded details
of Blaine's new challenge at this not-to-be-missed press
conference.

David Blaine and John Remington, VP of Events Marketing and
Communications for Target will meet the press on Friday,
November 17 to take the wraps off of Blaine's new challenge.

WHEN/ Friday, November 17
WHERE: 11:00 a.m.
West 46th Street
(A lot on the south side of the street between
Broadway and 8th Avenue)
New York, NY

VISUAL: * The location of David Blaine's next extraordinary challenge
* Q&A with David Blaine
* Q&A with John Remington of Target

SUMMARY: * The day after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping days
of the year. Only a stunt on the world's biggest stage is
spectacular enough to kick off the Target 2-Day Sale.
* Target has partnered with The Salvation Army to specially
select 100 deserving children who will benefit from Blaine's
successful completion of this challenge.
* David Blaine has accepted this challenge as a way to give back
to The Salvation Army, an organization that had memorable
impact on him as a child.

This is excellent news.

I'm looking forward to following this, as David's long awaited expansion into the world of large, live performance magic.

Merry Christmas to all.

Maybe they should do a network special...

David Blaine Vs. Criss Angel.

Have them perform on the streets trying to out-do each other. Now that is a special I want to see!

Good competition usually sparks better magic (or more convincing stooges)!

That would be a bad idea... David's magic is about it's effect on people and it's meaning, not about who does the better trick. Magicians need to realize people don't care about that anymore.

Jeez... I keep goin back to read my posts and they sound offensive.
I'm using the Café as a kind of notebook lately, so my posts are like "note-to-self's". And I don't specifically address anyone when I type...
So when I said "magicians" I didn't mean anyone in specific, I meant everyone, including me...
Just thought I'd make that clear, please don't take offense.

No offense Alex. I agree it would be a bad idea. However; I do not believe that Blaine thinks about the effect on people nor its meaning when he does his magic. I really believe it is about the effect on his bank account. I like his magic when he does it which is less and less often. Lately it is more about stunts and lately about stunts that don't work. I was taught not to do anything until it worked all the time. Angel at least gets his magic to work all the time and his stunts work all the time.

Which makes him boring
... in my opinion.

But let's not get into a DB Vs. CA argument... again

Like I said I'm really lookin forward to this stunt... David really knows how to build anticipation.

As for Blaine the sales approach with the network was the (over) reaction of spectators on the streets. There is no where where you can find a statement that says that the reaction you see is for the presentation Blaine did at that moment. They, wisely, edit in the best reactions to the effect and when focus is on Blaine they put in the best looking presentation. The end result is a bunch of people thinking that the reaction to magic should be someone screaming. The screaming is a response to the camera (except in New York City where people seem not to recognize cameras when they see them) crew and being informed when they sign the release that their reactions could be on TV if it fits in with what they are looking for (the exception again being New York City where people may sign a release and still be unaware that it is being filmed).

As for Angel I've only seen a few of his shows and his stunts seem to have a magical basis to them rather than an endurance angle. Note that stunts won't work in New York City as they are way too cool to go see something as mundane as a stunt.

And there can be a counter that shows how many times there is a camera cut for Blaine and for Criss. I'd bet there would be more on Criss' side.

Or how many times either of them says "And we've never met before, correct?" Again I think Criss would have the higher score...

David Blaine vs. Chris Angel - and then Cyril comes in a mops up the winner! Smile

Actually it sounds like one of the weird Claymation "Battle of the Network Stars" MTV used to do!
