60 minutes is a long time for a kid show. 30 - 45 seems to be enough. You want to leave them wanting more. You'll find out after you do it a few times if you need to cut back. Jim |

If the kids can play while you are doing balloon sculpturing it should be fine. If they have to sit and wait they will get bored and get up to some trouble,
Try to keep the magic to as close to 30 minutes as you can. Don't go over 45 minutes. |

Well the balloon sculpturing is more liek:
if they want a balloon they come and get a ablloon they can do whatever they want in that time. THe show is fast paced 35 40 minutes:) |

In that case make sure you have enough ballons for every kid and also make sure your fingers are used to tying 50 balloons. First time I did that I couldn't write for a few hours maybe even a day or so.
Enjoy. |

I'm more inclined to have a kid's show last only 20 to 25 minutes. Practice your balloon sculpturing so you can twist them fast.

The thumb tip flame raises another issue. In these "politically correct" times, some folks are now saying don't do any fire tricks, sawing or chopping tricks, or "anything from the mouth" for kid shows.
I did the chick pan (with a nice slow burning fire) at my last show, but then told the kids "don't do as I do, never play with matches or fire". But on second thought I think I'm going to eliminate it from the show. Jim |

Amazing what we used to be able to do at kid's shows years gone by. Now in this age with law suits we have to think twice on what we perform and then load them down with disclaimers.

As to lawsuits, you will never be sued for performing a pyro-type effect. Everybody is always ready to torture and blame the legal system for everything.
We are talking about "political correctness," which is a horse of a different color from legal principles. There is legitimacy to the feeling that you may send a confusing message to children when you say don't play with fire, as you play with fire. Children absorb and imitate what they see. They are not old enough, or expirenced enough, however, to realize the dangers and/or knowledgable on how to take the proper precautions. We all know too, that telling a kid not to do something is a sure "fire" (pun intended) way to gaurentee that they will do it because of the thrill. I do not use fire with kids for this reason, but that is my feeling. For example, when doing Jason Alexander's Bill in Lemon, instead of setting envelopes on fire, I simply shred them, or rip them up. Accomplishes the same result, does not put ideas into the kids' heads, and is safe. But I guess I come from expierence. After seeing my first magic show when I was 6 years old, the magician used flash paper in a chic pan. I decided that I was going to expierement with igniting tissue paper in my bathroom toliet bowl, and become a magician like him. My parents 37 years later have never let me forget how much it cost them to replace the entire bathroom after I burned it down. We laugh now, but we didn't at the time! Bob |

I guess you're an excellent example of what we're talking about!! Kids and fire just don't mix. Jim |
