Hi folks,
I had about 6 or 7 absolutely priceless saved messages in my "Saved" PM box. They have dissapeared. These were sent to me by well known Café members and contained information, which to me was priceless. What happened to them? Can they be recovered? If they can be recovered, can they please be put back! Cheers. |

Well, not really thinking that a box labeled "Saved" was just like any other box, I now see information indicating that ALL PM's are deleted after 60 days, regardless of what box they're in.
It goes without saying that this is something I discovered just now, and that my presumption was that messages in the "Saved" box were in fact "Saved". I am quite desperate to retrieve that information which was in my "Saved" box. Is this at all possible? I'm sure I can't be the only person who missed the information (not obvious unless you go looking for it) which tells you that your "Saved" box is really no different than any other box, and will be emptied by the system after 60 days. |

Yes, it's too bad you lost several important "Saved" messages on the system here. It's unfortunate that priceless messages like that get automatically dumped after sixty days even when put into the SAVED box. It's happened to me. On the other hand, it's ironic that there's no way to stop receiving the generic "Broadcast Messages" (most of which are ads) that are being sent out to everybody with more apparent frequency. It would be sort of like the U.S Postal system throwing away all the important, critical mail from your mailbox while you were on a three-week vacation and leaving you with only junk mail and fliers. But, as we've been told before, the rules are what they are.

I'm not looking to make this into anything more than what it is, and all I really want is access to those lost messages in order to download them for good.

Silverking, to answer you main concern, once a PM is deleted, it cannot be returned. What's lost is lost.
Hoodrat, a simple review of the rules and etiquette forum would explain that broadcast messages would occassionally be sent out at the descretion of management. It's Steve's board and if he wants to send out a broadcast message, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that it gets done. As far as this occurring more frequently, I can count the number of times it's happened in the last year on one hand so it's not a big deal. These also automatically get deleted after 7 days. If you don't want to read them, you can delete them like any other PM. Icy-rabbit and all, just as the rules and etiquette forums sets the standard and guidelines for the Café, the PM section has it's own FAQ area which fully details how the boxes work. I don't mean this to sound harsh but if everyone would actually read the rules and the FAQ's, there would be a lot fewer surprises as everything that is done on the Café is described in those areas. You might want to check this topic to get Steve's feeling on the subject of broadcast PM's. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......40&1

Thanks Dave.
This was a longer post, but I edited it because it's just not worth talking to you folks about Café problems. Café management is rapidly training Café users to not ask difficult questions that may actually require the Café to provide a little customer service in the answer or risk a double-barrel blast suggesting that we're nothing but whining freeloaders. I'm not sure this is the intent, but it's sure the result...........just ask around. |

Silverking, sorry you interpreted my response as a "double barrelled blast". That was not my intent in any way. You asked if your PM's could be restored and the answer was no. I believe your response was based on the second porion of my post. The complaint about broadcast messages has been raised several times with detailed responses. All I'm pointing out is that the rules and etiquette forums plus the FAQ's were placed there in an attempt to try and limit the number of common questions that are asked. If a member is having a problem or needs some help and can find the resolution immediately, why wait for a staff member to come on line and answer the question.
Almost every web site today has an FAQ section with instructions to read those before asking for help from their customer service department. That's all we're suggesting here on the Café. In regards to the comments about the broadcast messages, the situation was just questioned a few days ago with a detailed answer given by Steve. We do expect and welcome you to talk to us about Café problems. There are situations we may not have considered or need to adjust but when the question is something that has been covered many times before, a little research by the member first would make things a lot easier for all of us.

Maybe this is an area that the Café could make some money? Charge $3-4 per year to have an inbox free of deletion that will hold so many posts? Just a thought since many e-mail services work in this way and it would help people all around.

Or how about just making the "Saved" box save messages until they're deleted.
It's not really the revolutionary concept it might at first seem to be. To charge for the service implies that Café users don't already bring value to the Café. Without "us", there's not much left. |

I never said users didn't bring value. The users are the value. However, it costs money to keep a site this size going and it would be a low cost option that could help users get something they are wanting at a low rate and help the Café cover their costs. It is win-win.

I just got burned too. I thought "saved" meant saved.
I try to extract the important information from the PMs, but when I couldn't find something on my computer, I went to the "saved" section, but all was gone.
