I'm wanting to buy a Card Sword but I don't want to have to throw a deck of cards in the air and have them scatter all over the place to perform the effect.
I'm thinking letting a balloon float up a little in the air, stab it with the sword and voila at the tip of the sword is the selected card. Anyone know a card sword which would allow this type of performance? With a sharp tip on sword could this be timed to look good? Do all the commercially available swords rely on a shower of cards for cover? Any suggestions? Thanks !! |

Could you be more precise? Stabbing through the balloon catching the one card without cards being scattered around - and the balloon still intact? Good Luck!

What about using a paper bag. You could have all the cards mixed in bag, have someone hold the bag an you thrust the sword in the open bag and pull out the card, you could even stab thru the bag without the cards going everywhere.

I think the concept of stabbing a balloon and having it burst and the chosen card is impaled on the sword is a good one visually. (You could even have glitter or confetti in the balloon.) However, it does change the effect from stabbing the one chosen card from a shower of different cards into an effect where just a card appears out of nowhere and it's the chosen card.
Which do you think is more baffling? Julie |

The paper bag idea seems to be spot on. Even if the bag falls, the cards ain't going anywhere.

If you really think a bag is the answer, how about a clear bag?

Have you asked yourself what the effect is, if you're using a balloon? Is the effect to have the selection appear in the balloon? If so, Pavel has a method that would work well, in his lecture notes. It can be done with a signed card, too. You can shake the balloon, so that the card can be heard to be rattling around inside. The spectator can pop the balloon with a pin, as you hold it.

The Pavel handling is clever, but it's not 100% "goof-proof". The card sword is reliable and will permit you to concentrate on whatever presentation you finally decide upon (and it's more showy/impressive for a larger audience).

Having recently added the card sword to my stage act, I can tell you that the whole visual to an audience of having the cards fluttering to the ground as you stab into them and catch a card is awesome to an audience! That was one effect that they continued talking about after the show.
Now, as for which sword, check out Julio Lipan's sword. This is the one I'm using. I've added a few touches to enhance the look of the sword, but in all it's one of the best. Stevens' Magic sells them for about $298. Rick
