In five years he will have made a million. Without overtime, he can make it in 10 years. My son who has his masters in computers and can make 100,000 a year as a software engineer if he wants to can also make a million per year. Add in his wife's salary, and it is less than that. My annual income tax forms, for over 10 years, was more than $100,000 per year, so I already made my millions. John Kaplan, doing Fundraisers, can make it in 10 years, easily. He is established and his method is solid, and practical. What do all these have in common: 1. Planning 2. Education and 3. Motivation So when I say making a million is easiy, I am not talking making it in a day. To do that I need to come up with something everybody needs and must have and I am the only person that can give it to them, that is before someone else copies it. Hi Dennis -
Your fee is too low if you have to do a zillion children's shows to earn a million dollars. Hehehe! Even if it was $1 per show, it would only take a million shows. Anyway, some people earn lots of money, but also go through it, too. The key is not just earning it, but holding onto it. I'm sure that's been mentioned somewhere in this thread. - Donald

Holding on to it is not as good as investing it into real estate, which grows much more rapidly than money markets.
In five years one of my homes has increased it's investment value 4 times. And yes, for a while I spent lots of it, and now realize what I could have done with that waste of money. There was a show on TV about those who won the lottery and it destroyed their lives. It was an eye opening show.

I saw that show...it was really sad! Made me happy for what I have. I would like to make a million a year, but most I would put away for retirement, college funds for two kids, pay off the mortgage on my house and...I'd treat my wife to a yearly week in Mexico....

A great old book that is also available in an unabridged audio version is George S. Clason's book, "The Richest Man In Babylon". At one point, the main character saves one out of every ten coins he receives over a three year period. Then he spends it all the first year, spends the interest he made after the second year, and finally "gets it" and learns to let the interest gain interest and "not eat the children of his savings". This book was distrbuted by banks as a series of pamphlets in the early-mid 20th Century and still is a great book to learn from.

For those interested, John Kaplan will be lecturing at the 2007 KIDabra Conference. He is "the king" on Fundraisers.

Dennis,
It's interesting reading this thread as most of it was written prior to the recession. It just makes me wonder how many folks are still doing 6-10 birthday parites every weekend. Gerry |

Not every weekend, but every week. I do a lot of mid-week shows at schools and after-school show parties. Together, they make on average 7 shows a week.

A clown friend of mind, does 5-6 half hours shows a day on Sat/Sun and is booked solid. He gets most of his shows from doing a family diner every Sunday morning for an hour. He gets $150, a show. That's about $1,500 plus a weekend. (Very few weekends off) He supplies the diner with coloring page advertisement and 4 crayons.
He's had two heart attacks and will not stop. He likes what he does and likes the extra money. Yes, he also works 5 days a week. He's in his 50s now. Is it worth this? Not for me, because I don't need the money enough to risk my health or take so much time away from the family.

I’ve enjoyed this thread and am glad Dennis refreshed it.
To be a success you have to think successfully. Therefore, you must think differently than 95% of the population. I don’t know if you can make a million dollars in magic shows but I know you’ll never get there without making goals and have some type of plan to get there, like Dennis and others have suggested. This is an example of how goal setting works: I have a goal to exercise 6 days a week. Now 2 of those days I will find some excuse not to do so. So I’ll end up exercising 4 days per week. If I had a goal to exercise 4 days a week, I would probably end up exercising 2 days a week. If I had no goal of exercising, it is likely I would not exercise at all, become fat and die! My point is, it is human nature to fall short of your goals, however, the higher you set your goals the higher your success is likely to be. Here are some notes from goals that I wrote about 15 years ago: Goal: Earn $150K per year in magic. School shows-book 120 school days (2 shows per day=$750 per day =$90,000) Birthday Parties-2 per week for 40 weeks per year ($300 per show =$24,000) Family Stage Show at various venues-2 per week for 40 weeks per year ($300 per show =$24,000) Restaurant work-Maintain current restaurant work ($12,000) Dennis also touched on the importance of family and health. What good is reaching a million dollar goal if you sacrifice your family and health to get it? In the example above I’ve planned 40 school days off and 12 weekends off, because I have other goals too. I have goals to improve my family relationships, improve my relationship with God, improve my health, improve the appearance of my home, etc. etc. If you don’t know where you’re going, it is unlikely you will get anywhere. PS I highly recommend Jim Snack’s material on this subject. He knows how to think successfully!

Goals are very important.
One caution, do not over burden yourself with lots and lots of goals or you will be overwhelmed. Be as specific as possible. Back in the mid 70s, I set a goal that I will have a net worth of $50,000 in 5 years. I posted this on my mirror in the bathroom so I would see it every day, and several times a day. I've well exceeded that goal, by 10 fold. And own everything, no debts that can't be payed off monthly. It's a good feeling. The problem is, I don't have to work, I have a nice pension, excellent medical plan, and this allows me to do nothing if I feel like it. I do Magic shows because "doing nothing" is boring, and non productive. Owning two homes, three cars, thousands in magic, and having grown kids does not make one happy or feel like I am accomplishing anything. To live, one needs to fulfill one's heart with happiness. This is accomplished by giving happiness to others, hence "Magician Helping Magicians" fulfills that need, but most importantly, making kids laugh and seeing their happy faces, fulfills that all important goal. I feel there are many unhappy "campers" here on the Café who don't know how to get the feelings I mention above. I remind myself of this often when such postings are not productive. Goals are important, and knowing how to obtain them is also important. Write that realistic goal on a 3x5 card and post it on the mirror. The mind will find a way to meet it. Here's are some goals. Pick one:

Dennis, that is probably the most helpful information ever posted on the Café.
I know from experience it works. In my case I had to give up magic as a full time job to make a million. But hey, there are many ways to enjoy the magic. Having what you want (whatever that is) is as simple as making up your mind to have it, and then going out and getting it. It's that easy. It's that simple. It is impossible to set a realistic goal that you cannot reach. The mind will not allow you to write it down. Don't believe it? Try it. You CANNOT Seriously set a realistic goal that you can't reach. Generally speaking a GOAL is broad statement of what one wants to accomplish. Objectives are the steps necessary to reach that goal.
To set a proper goal one must Organize, Evaluate and Prioritize a list of desirable goals This is necessary to determine Which goals are needed to be done first and Whythey need to be done; and When they should be completed (A specific time table) and How they are to be completed. Specific Objectives should be in written format spelling out how to reach that goal as well as how that goal will affect other goals. The Objective should be Specific and Detailed as much as possible, including a Meaningful Reason (The Motivation) on why you want to obtain that goal. It must be Measurable, so you can see the progress you're making toward that goal. It must be Attainable and Realistic so frustration and failure are not options. There must also be a Timetable for reaching that goal, including a Specific Periodical Evaluation of the Objective so it can be modified to meet the changing events that occur while accomplishing the objective.
Using the above can really help one reach any goal they desire, including making a Million Dollars a Year as a Magician Give it a try below. Make a goal statement. Then develop a method in reaching that. I will be glad to help you reach that goal, by reviewing the objectives. If you don't want to do it publicly than PM me and I will assist you privately. Dennis

Dennis! I want to make $1,000,000 a year doing magic! Here is a description of the demographics for a 45 mile circle around me.
1. total elementry schools, 4 (one a mile away, the rest 20 plus miles in three directons) 2. Total middle/high schools, 4 3. Main business: brothels and casinos. 4. Preschools, 5 5. Total residents, 55,000 So tell me, oh guru of the marketing plans, how do I get 300-400 shows a year out of this? |

Dennis Michael Inner circle Southern, NJ 5821 Posts |
Magic Santa, yours is quite simple. The first requirement is the motivation for making this kind of money. If you are serious to make a million a year then it requires you to move to a location where the demographics support your sincere goal. Without being sincere, then the goal is unreachable due to unmovable blocks, preventing you from reaching those goals.
An option is to consider going on the road for a specific number of days a week. There are magicians who do not have limitations related to travel distances. Working on creating books, DVDs, and producing sell able programs can do this. Right now, from your post you have limited your working distance to 45 miles, open it up to 600 or more miles. For instance, charging $695 for a desirable school show program makes this travel worth while. Plan on doing several shows a week in the same area in the direction of travel. (Write out this plan and booking dates.) Yes, it can be done. You only need to be very serious about making life changes to reach that goal. You also have to be good at what you do, making your program desirable, word of mouth is a good seller. Think positive. You can do it. If you want to continue this, PM me with your plan using the above list spelling out your objectives. From your previous postings you are not new at this business, so part of the goal is already done. The knowledge of performing shows.

I have to move? What if I charge $150,000 a show? Dang math! I just left an area where kids shows go for $400 on weekends!

If you want to charge, $150,000 a show that to is possible, without moving. Create TV versions that will sell and ask that for airing.
As you can see, I am being serious and you are trying to be funny. In my responses there are ways if one truly wants to work at it. Tom said it very well above: "It is impossible to set a realistic goal that you cannot reach. The mind will not allow you to write it down. Don't believe it? Try it. You CANNOT Seriously set a realistic goal that you can't reach. "
