Over on the Stage forum, under Tubes, etc., we've been discussing multiplying bottles and Ken Brooke, the UK dealer.

Presumably, the bottles came from the Passe Passe Bottle effect, but When? Where? And Who is supposed to have invented it?

Not an effect to have been manufactured lightly, even if the shells were pressed tin rather than the spun metal of today.

It's one of those effects that seems to be have been around for a long time, though over here in the UK, I don't remember seeing it till mid or later 1950s.

Remember the 1939-45 war put paid to a lot of magical and other cross Atlantic activity. Materials weren't available. However, the restrictions here were worse after the war. You couldn't buy things, not even home produced. They went for export.

So a lot of things suddenly appeared during the 50s, which might by then have been old hat in the USA.

It would be interesting to discover the effect's origins, seeing as I've been doing it for forty years!

Interesting history about American magic exports to Britain.

I think I have seen them (multiplying bottles) mentioned in books from the early 20th century.
